Oxford United’s most expensive sales ever made including Scottish Premiership winner and former Grenada international

Oxford United are preparing for their second consecutive season in the Championship, after their impressive campaign kept them in the division despite many expecting the club to be relegated.

The ambition this season is to once again keep the club in the division, and to do this they will need to build their squad full of talent who can compete at the Championship.

Gary Rowett will have assessed where he needs to add to his squad for the upcoming Championship season; however, this also means he will know which players can leave the club.

It is unlikely these players would fetch a high fee, as they are seen as surplus to requirements at Oxford, yet it got us thinking at EFL Analysis: who are the five most expensive sales the club have ever made?

5. Shandon Baptiste – £1.9 million

Starting off the list with information from Transfermarkt is the Grenada international, Shandon Baptiste, who left the club in the January of 2020 to join Brentford for a fee of £1.9 million.

Baptiste had spent three seasons at the senior level with the club after coming through the youth academy, joining from Reading in 2015.

The midfielder would feature in 43 matches for the club across the period, with Brentford spotting some potential in him to spend the money to bring him to London.

4. Matt Elliott – £2.1 million

Matt Elliott spent four years with Oxford United after he joined the club from Scunthorpe United.

The defender would feature in 148 league matches for the club, scoring an impressive 21 goals when you consider his position.

However, he left the club in early 1997 to join Leicester City, and he would thrive at the club.

Elliot proved to be influential in Leicester’s run to the 2000 Football League Cup Final and their victory in the game itself, as he scored a goal in the semi-final and then a brace in the final.

3. Rob Dickie – £2.3 million

Rob Dickie left Oxford United in the summer of 2020 following three seasons at Oxford for a fee of £2.3 million.

Dickie proved to be a rock at the back for Oxford, earning him a move to QPR in the Championship, where again he proved to be reliable.

The defender recently signed for Bristol City, and he has continued his fine form in the Championship.

2. Marvin Johnson – £2.3 million

Marvin Johnson was sold for the exact same price as Rob Dickie but in the summer of August 2017.

The midfielder only spent one full season at Oxford after he joined from Motherwell in the summer of 2016.

Johnson was acquired by Middlesbrough for a fee of £2.3 million, as he featured in 52 appearances across that campaign, scoring six goals.

Since then, he has gone on to firstly become an important player for Middlesbrough and then Sheffield Wednesday.

1. Kemar Roofe – £3 million

Oxford United’s most expensive sale ever is the departure of Kemar Roofe to Leeds United in the summer of 2016 for a fee of £3 million.

Roofe only spent a season and a half at Oxford, originally joining on loan from West Brom before joining permanently.

In that one season Roofe scored 26 goals across 48 appearances, earning him a move to Leeds United, who were fighting for promotion from the Championship.

It was a significant fee to spend on a player who had only impressed at Oxford in that one season at League Two level, so the £3 million fee raised eyebrows.
