Everyone has doubted them all summer, but when you look at the list of Middlesbrough transfers, it’s not really surprising that they’ve proven everyone wrong.
Appointing Rob Edwards was seen as a big risk amid the departure of Michael Carrick. Middlesbrough fans were not happy, but after an impressive start to the season, everyone has changed their minds.
Boro were one of the winners of the transfer window thanks to keeping hold of Hayden Hackney. But, that’s not the only reason they had a successful summer.
A few Middlesbrough transfers caught our eye, and the club also made some smart sales to balance the books, too.

All confirmed Middlesbrough transfers this summer
Middlesbrough were one of the slowest teams to do business this summer, but once they got going, they made some shrewd moves.
The signing of David Strelec was hailed by Edwards. He’s a player the club has been hunting since way back in January and many suspect he could be a real hit this season.
Boro also replaced Rav van den Berg with Alfie Jones, a move which has been praised by Head of Football, Kieran Scott.
Fans are also delighted with Middlesbrough’s loan signing, Sverre Nypan. The Man City youngster has a big future ahead of him and could light up the Championship in 2025/26.
Meanwhile, Alan Browne chose to join Middlesbrough on loan, snubbing Blackburn Rovers. Speaking of, Boro also took Callum Brittain off Blackburn after weeks of speculation.
Confirmed Middlesbrough transfers:
- David Strelec (£6.5m from Slovan Bratislava)
- Adilson Malinda (£6m from Charlotte FC)
- Sontje Hansen (£3m from NEC Nijmegen)
- Abdoulaye Kante (£2.6m from Troyes)
- Kaly Sene (£1.5m from Lausanne-Sport)
- Jon McLaughlin (free)
- Alfie Jones (undisclosed fee from Hull City)
- Callum Brittain (undisclosed fee from Blackburn Rovers)
- Sverre Nypan (loan from Man City)
- Matt Targett (loan from Newcastle United)
- Alan Browne (loan from Sunderland)
Overall, Middlesbrough brought in 11 new players and spent £26.5m, which makes them one of the biggest spenders in the Championship this summer.

All Middlesbrough outgoings
Middlesbrough confirmed their retained list in May following the close of the 2024/25 season.
It was revealed that Anfernee Dijksteel would be departing as a free agent at the end of his contract.
Elsewhere, Josh Coburn has joined Millwall permanently after a loan spell with the Lions in 2024/25.
The biggest deal for Boro, though, was selling Finn Azaz to Southampton for £12m. That was a blow, naturally, but selling Azaz meant Boro could keep Hayden Hackney without any financial issues.
The other big move saw Rav van den Berg take the next step in his career to join FC Koln. It’s a sale Boro saw coming for months, to be fair, and was not much of a surprise.
Confirmed Middlesbrough exits:
- Anfernee Dijksteel (Released, Kocaelispor)
- Josh Coburn (£5.5m, to Millwall)
- Finn Azaz (£12m to Southampton)
- Rav van den Berg (£7m to FC Koln)
- Jonny Howson (free, to Leeds United)
- Neto Borges (loan to Bristol City)
- Marcus Forss (loan to Bolton Wanderers)
- Dan Barlaser (loan to Hibernian)
- Tom Glover (released)
- George Gitau (released)
Thanks to clever moves this summer, Middlesbrough have a £60m PSR cushion as things stand. Boro’s net spend was positive £4.9m after all the deals were done.
