Birmingham City target Kyogo Furuhashi has already dropped a huge hint over his Rennes future

Birmingham City could pull off arguably the best signing of the Championship transfer window by landing Kyogo Furuhashi.

Only last year, Kyogo was playing in the Champions League with Celtic, and now he could be joining Chris Davies’ side in the Championship.

Birmingham have shown an interest in Kyogo after his £10 million transfer to Rennes in the January transfer window hasn’t worked out so far, with the 30-year-old only making six appearances for a combined 120 minutes.

Joe Hart’s praise for Kyogo in 2023 is just one reason why the Blues snapping up a transfer for the Japanese international would be sensational, and he’s already dropped a hint over his future.

Kyogo Furuhashi wants to fight for his place at Rennes

Birmingham can offer new signings at least £30k-a-week this summer, which is an astronomical amount for a club coming up from League One.

Tom Wagner has set his sights on the Premier League, and the capture of Kyogo would be a huge statement of intent in their quest.

While fans are excited about the possibility, completing a deal won’t be easy, as the Japanese maverick has already dropped a huge hint on his Rennes future.

Kyogo was a special guest of honour at half time at his former club Vissel Kobe’s game on Sunday, and the former Celtic hitman gave a speech to the fans and appeared to indicate he wanted to prove himself in France.

“I’m so happy to be able to stand in front of you all again,” Kyogo said. “I’ll work harder and harder next season so that I can give you good news in future. Thank you for all your support.”

Whether interest in Birmingham could sway his stance on staying at Rennes remains to be seen, but he appears keen to redeem himself after a disappointing start in Ligue 1.

Bournemouth were linked with Kyogo in May 2025

Kyogo was phenomenal during his time at Celtic before joining Rennes for around £10 million, as demonstrated by his return of 104 goal involvements in 165 appearances.

Now the player is short of confidence after being frozen out by manager Habib Beye and could either fight for his place there, or move elsewhere.

Birmingham fans will be hoping he agrees personal terms with them and moves to the Championship, though Kyogo has also attracted Premier League interest.

In May, Le Parisien stated that Bournemouth ‘positioned themselves’ to launch a move for Kyogo but nothing has yet materialised, leaving the Blues confident of sealing his signature.
