Blackburn Rovers reignite interest in midfield ace, but one ‘concern’ remains

Blackburn Rovers are pursuing a play-off finish in the 2025/26 Championship campaign.

After missing out on the final day of last season, Valerien Ismael is doing all he can to get his team prepared for next weekend’s fixtures. However, there is still more work to be done.

Tyrhys Dolan has joined Espanyol after his contract at Ewood Park expired this summer, while Callum Brittain is liked by Derby County and Middlesbrough.

Getting players in is a must, with depth required in multiple positions, including central midfield. Now, Blackburn have turned their attention back to a former target after a move for him earlier in July stalled.

Blackburn Rovers are seeking deal for Moussa Baradji

On 11 July, the Lancashire Telegraph reported that a deal for Moussa Baradji had stalled, although there was uncertainty behind the reason.

However, Alan Nixon has explained that a move could still be on and talks are ongoing between Blackburn and Swiss club Yverdon Sport, as well as the midfielder.

Nixon said: “Blackburn Rovers are re-opening talks with Swiss side Yverdon Sports for midfielder Moussa Baradji. The French-Malian star made a surprise return at the weekend after Rovers found a problem with his foot in a medical.

“Rovers hope to agree a pay-as-you-play deal as there are still concerns about Baradji’s fitness which may need a lay-off. Baradji is keen to move and also follow their plans for handling the injury.”

Valerien Ismael is keen to get a deal done

At 24, the midfielder is exactly the right age that Ismael should be targeting as he looks to put his own touch on this team and it is clear to see just how much he wants this signing to happen.

However, rightly, there will be concerns over Baradji’s fitness if he has already failed a medical. Therefore, a pay-as-you-play deal could be the perfect way to ensure that Blackburn do not overspend on someone who may take time to be match-ready.

Lewis Travis is a crucial cog in Ismael’s side and Rovers must keep hold of him if they are to mount a top six push this season. But, at this moment in time, it still feels as though the Lancashire outfit are lacking that cutting edge to put them firmly in that fight.
