Leicester City appear to be close to making their first signing of the summer.

Fabrizio Romano revealed that the Foxes are in talks to sign Asmir Begovic on a free transfer.

The 38-year-old is expected to come in as a back-up option with Mads Hermansen linked away with a transfer and Jakob Stolarczyk the ready-made number one replacement.

Marti Cifuentes knows Begovic well from their time together at Queens Park Rangers so knows exactly what he would be signing up for and by the sounds of it, Leicester fans are going to love what they see from Cifuentes.

Asmir Begovic said Marti Cifuentes ‘brought a level of togetherness’ to QPR

Begovic was the man between the sticks for QPR while Cifuentes was in charge at Loftus Road.

Under the Catalonian’s guidance, the 43-year-old helped to steer the R’s away from the Championship relegation zone before consolidating their spot in the second tier.

Cifuentes was eventually placed on gardening leave before leaving the club, however, Begovic felt that his former boss brought the squad together like he’d not seen.

Speaking to Sky Sports in March 2024, he said: “He’s been really good for us, really positive for all of the players, the staff and even the fans.

“He’s brought a level of togetherness maybe that QPR haven’t had in a while. We’re all very much on the same page, he’s a great leader, great manager and someone who puts us out there to succeed every week.

Asmir Begovic would be a sensible deal for Leicester

Although Leicester fans are hoping Cifuentes will remove the deadwood, the Foxes don’t need to make wholesale changes.

As proved by their last Championship outing, Leicester already have a very strong squad containing the likes of Abdul Fatawu and Harry Winks so don’t need lots to add.

Born winners coming in on low wages and there to act as a back-up to a younger option is a smart piece of business.

Having been around the block, playing for plenty of big clubs in England, it’s a risk-free signing that can help others understand the Cifuentes way.
