Middlesbrough legend tells Rob Edwards he has to sign ‘proven top flight’ player

Rob Edwards is set to begin his Middlesbrough tenure at home against Swansea City in the Championship this weekend.

The Teesside club are hoping to improve on their disappointing end to the last campaign, and this started with replacing Michael Carrick with Rob Edwards at the helm.

Recently there has been a move to bring in some players to strengthen the squad to allow them to compete for the play-offs, with Callum Brittain joining from Blackburn Rovers.

Fans will hope that their business in the transfer market is not over, as they wish to see more players added to help in their ambitions this season.

Now a Middlesbrough legend has instructed exactly who Rob Edwards should go after to give that much-needed top-flight experience to the squad.

Middlesbrough should sign Danny Ings

This is the view of Middlesbrough legend Gary Pallister, who believes that Danny Ings would be a fine addition, with the striker previously in talks with the club.

Ings has been without a club following the expiration of his contract with West Ham this summer and has been the subject of interest from several Championship clubs this summer.

Pallister believes that the club should bring him in due to his track record of finding the net, as he told BetVictor through Teesside Live.

He said: “Danny Ings is proven in the top flight; he’s 33. I like him as a player, and he knows where the goal is. Players at that age are a lot fitter than they were probably back in my day with sports science and stuff like that.

“I think it’s all about the hunger, and he looks as though he’s got the hunger to still want to be enjoying his football and still want to be the best that he can be. The wages could be a problem, but you’re getting him on a free and he’s a proven goalscorer.

“I’m sure Middlesbrough won’t be the only team that’s interested in Danny Ings. I think a lot of the Championship clubs out there will be looking at him and thinking, ‘Yeah, he could do us a job’. I’d love to see him here, but I think it’s a difficult one to get over the line.”

Danny Ings’s record in front of goal

The England international has proven that he can perform in both the Championship and the Premier League throughout his career, although he has not featured in the second tier since 2014.

Ings is vastly experienced, having spent the last 11 seasons in the Premier League with several clubs.

He has shown that he can deliver and be a constant threat at every club he has gone to, despite finding minutes harder to come by in his later Premier League career, and so a move to the Championship may help him find his goalscoring touch once again.
