Southampton endured a truly torrid 2024/25 Premier League season, a campaign that culminated in a swift and disappointing relegation back to the Championship.
Finishing at the foot of the table after a rough year, the harsh reality of top-flight football highlighted the squad’s shortcomings and the immediate need for significant change.
As the summer transfer window now fully opens, the focus at St Mary’s has shifted to their Championship resurgence.
Rebuilding a competitive squad capable of challenging for an immediate return to the top flight requires not only clever recruitment but also a strategic approach to player sales.
In line with this vital rebuild, EFL Analysis, with exclusive information from our transfer expert Graeme Bailey, can confirm player departures are on the cards at St Mary’s.
These moves will undoubtedly shake up the squad, leaving newly appointed manager Will Still with some immediate work to do.

Paul Onuachu and Kamaldeen Sulemana set for departure
“Southampton sources have confirmed to EFL Analysis that they have agreed terms to sell Nigerian international Paul Onuachu,” Bailey shared.
“Onuachu is set to join Turkish outfit Trabzonspor – where he previously spent time on loan.
“We can confirm that Onuachu has agreed on a three-year deal to move to Turkey – ending two years at St Mary’s.

“Sources also confirm that they have received a bid from Atalanta for Kamaldeen Sulemana.
“Southampton are set to allow Ghana winger Sulemana to leave the club this summer, although the opening offer of £10million is below The Saints’ valuation.
“Atalanta, now coached by former Southampton boss Ivan Juric, are set to return with an increased offer.”

Why player sales are crucial for Will Still’s Southampton rebuild
On the surface, allowing players like Paul Onuachu and Kamaldeen Sulemana to leave might appear counterproductive for a club aiming for an immediate Premier League return.
Both players are talented; Onuachu offers an aerial threat, while Sulemana boasts a fast pace.
However, their Premier League output often didn’t justify their high transfer fees and wages, particularly given Championship finances.
For manager Will Still, these departures are vital for financial restructuring with a key Southampton transfer plan needing to be implemented.

Selling high-value players provides crucial cash to ease wage burdens and reinvest in players who have proven themselves in the Championship.
Still’s impressive past, including a 19-game unbeaten run at Stade de Reims with a young, dynamic squad, showcases his ability to maximise players’ potential.
This pragmatic approach is essential for Still to mould a hungry squad, leveraging his renowned skills in developing and getting the best from younger players for a strong promotion push.
