Oxford United have beaten Birmingham City and several Championship rivals to the signing of a Rangers star to help in their aim of maintaining their status in the second tier of English football.

Oxford United lost 3-2 away to Hull City last weekend, with Oli McBurnie scoring a last-minute winner for the Tigers to claim the three points.

Gary Rowett will have identified the need for quality defensive options before this defeat; however, the fact they conceded three goals to their Championship relegation rivals will have solidified this belief.

To beat Birmingham City to the signing of this player is a statement of intent for Oxford United, as the Blues owners have ambitions of bringing their club to the Premier League, so this will give fans of the U’s confidence moving forward.

Oxford United to sign Ben Davies

It has been reported by Pete O’Rourke on social media that Oxford United have signed Ben Davies from Europe, beating both QPR and Birmingham City to the signature of the defender.

Davies had been playing for Birmingham City last season and was an important piece of their record-breaking League One campaign, as they broke the record point haul on the way to lifting the title.

The 30-year-old has had a career full of different clubs, playing for both Liverpool and Rangers, two of the biggest clubs in Britain, while also proving he is Championship quality during his spell with Preston North End.

The move to Liverpool from Preston North End in February 2021 was a shock to many, and it subsequently did not work out for the player, as he never wore the red jersey in a competitive match.

However, Jurgen Klopp appeared to be a fan, stating to the club website: “I love a lot about his play. He’s a really good footballer, looks like a proper leader in this Preston team, is good in challenges, looks football smart, and can play different positions because he played in a back three and a back four and all these things.”

Michael Beale was a major fan of Ben Davies

While Michael Beale may not have signed Ben Davies for Rangers, that decision was made by Giovanni van Bronckhorst; the former Sunderland manager was a huge fan of the former Liverpool player.

Speaking with TNT Sports, he said: “What about Ben Davies? Comes into the season injured and misses up until after the international break. A lot has been said about him outside, and the last two performances from him have been outstanding. Two clean sheets, coming back into the team.

“I thought tonight in a really tight game the desire of the team on that set play won it. We had other chances and hit the bar and post; it wasn’t perfect, and we need to improve, but it was a big step in the right direction.”
