Hull City picked up their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon, as they left it late to beat Oxford United 3-2 at the MKM Stadium.
The Tigers took the lead inside just two minutes, as Joe Gelhardt scored on his return to East Yorkshire, after he made the switch from Leeds United on loan for the second season in a row.
Another Premier League loanee, in the form of Tottenham Hotspur’s Will Lankshear, levelled the game for the U’s soon after before Matt Crooks restored the home side’s advantage, with Cameron Brannagan making it 2-2 just moments later in a crazy opening 26 minutes.
It looked as though the points were going to be shared at the MKM Stadium, but just weeks after he rejected Swansea City and Sheffield United for Hull, Oli McBurnie found the back of the net in the dying moments to secure a first victory under Sergej Jakirovic.

Sergej Jakirovic hails Oli McBurnie after his late Hull City winner vs Oxford United
McBurnie scored in mid-week for the Tigers, although Jakirovic believed his side had much to learn from their Carabao Cup exit against Wrexham.

Nevertheless, he was delighted with his new striker as he ensured that all three points remained in Yorkshire, explaining just how vital the 29-year-old is for Hull. Jakirovic said (via: The Herald): “That was his second goal in his second game and two assists, I think.
“He was from the beginning our first wish (in the transfer window). He was not with us in the first weeks this summer, but he can run and knows the league very well. He is massive for us. He has experience and quality and it’s very promising for us.”
McBurnie’s winner for Hull was his first Championship goal since he found the back of the net for Sheffield United against Birmingham City in a 2-1 win in May 2023.
Oli McBurnie was the difference against Oxford United
After an excellent defensive performance against Coventry City last week, the Tigers showed their attacking prowess against Oxford.
McBurnie was the key to it all, scoring the winner and picking up the assists for the two other goals. He created five chances in total, and had 34 touches across the game, with 10 of those coming in the U’s box.

He had just two shots, but it was his link-up play that proved to be the difference and Oxford were unable to contain him and cope with his experience.
The forward is quickly proving to be a fan favourite at the MKM Stadium, and if Hull are going to avoid relegation and push for a mid-table finish, they will need to see more performances like this from their star signing.
