Preston North End set to beat Wrexham and Celtic to signature of ‘highly-regarded’ Northern Irish talent

Preston North End are making a significant impact in the summer transfer window ahead of the 2025/26 Championship season to ensure they don’t get dragged into a relegation battle once again.

The Lancashire club have seen several incomings and outgoings, with the most notable player leaving the club being star striker Emil Riis. The big striker bagged 12 goals in 2024/25 to help keep the Whites in the division.

Sheffield Wednesday fans let Preston know exactly what type of player they were getting when they announced the signing of Pol Valentin.

However, Paul Heckingbottom has continued his pursuit of bringing in talent this summer to raise the club up the Championship; however, the latest player to whom they have been linked may be one for the future.

Preston ‘considering’ signing Cliftonville teenager

Shay Reid has been on trial with Preston for the past week with the academy, and he has seemingly enjoyed his time in Lancashire.

The Northern Ireland underage star scored and assisted in a 3-2 victory over Sheffield Wednesday and followed that up with a brace and another assist in a 4-3 win against Wrexham.

It has been reported in the Belfast Telegraph that Preston are now ‘considering’ making contact with Cliftonville to sign the teenager following his trial at the club.

However, Preston are not the only club interested in signing the 17-year-old; it has been reported Wrexham and Celtic, where he also had a trial, are keen on acquiring the services of Reid.

Who is Shay Reid?

Reid is a graduate of the Cliftonville youth academy, and while he has yet to make an appearance for the senior side, he was on the bench against Derry City earlier this month.

It is no surprise the 17-year-old is of interest to a number of teams this summer, as he scored over 50 goals for Cliftonville’s reserve and youth teams last year.

Reid has also demonstrated his underage pedigree with Cliftonville in Europe, scoring in his sole appearance in the UEFA Youth League last season.

The underage star has been prolific at every level in which he has featured, as he scored 27 goals at the Under-16 level before being promoted to the Under-18s and scoring a further nine two seasons ago and now he is making senior appearances in pre-season.

Having just turned 17 on Friday, there is a high ceiling for this clinical striker, and Preston look to be the favourites at present to secure his services for the future.
