The long-debated future of Middlesbrough defender Rav van den Berg has become clear following the start of the 2025/26 Championship season.

The Rob Edwards era at Middlesbrough in the Championship began with an impressive win over Swansea City on Saturday afternoon.

A second-half goal from defender Dael Fry was enough to secure all three points for Boro and send Edwards’ side into tonight’s (August 12) Carabao Cup home clash with Doncaster Rovers on a positive note.

With the summer transfer window approaching the deadline on September 1, the future of multiple key Middlesbrough stars such as Hayden Hackney and Finn Azaz remains in the balance.

Now, the transfer saga regarding central defender Rav van den Berg has reached its conclusion.

Middlesbrough agree deal with FC Koln for Rav van den Berg

The footballing future of central defender Rav van den Berg has been in contention throughout the summer window.

EFL Analysis exclusively revealed earlier in August that Middlesbrough would let van den Berg go amid interest from Feyenoord and FC Koln.

Van den Berg missed Middlesbrough vs Swansea, but his absence was not felt by Edwards thanks to Fry’s resolute display in defence and new signing Alfie Jones.

Edwards explained van den Berg’s absence but admitted there was “no update as yet” in his pre-Swansea press conference.

Days later, the answer to the transfer saga has emerged, with Middlesbrough agreeing a deal with FC Koln for van den Berg.

Reporter Dominic Shaw revealed on X: “Deal agreed between #Boro and FC Koln for Rav van den Berg totals €13m including add-ons. VDB having medical this afternoon.

“To add to this, it was around £250k #Boro paid for VDB when they signed him from PEC Zwolle two summers ago. There’s a sell-on in agreement with FC Koln as well.”

The Dutchman departs with 66 Middlesbrough appearances in all competitions and one goal to his name.

With a deal totaling €13m/£11.2m, this constitutes an impressive piece of business from Boro, given the profit involved.

Middlesbrough have made right decision after Rav van den Berg admission

Van den Berg arrived from PEC Zwolle in 2023, and cemented himself as one of the best young central defenders in the Championship during his two-season stint at Middlesbrough.

His athleticism, physical presence and ability to progress possession as a natural left-footer make the Dutchman the ideal left centre-back for the modern game.

In June, van den Berg discussed his future whilst on international duty, after EFL Analysis revealed that Middlesbrough were likely to lose him without promotion, which they eventually failed to achieve under Michael Carrick.

Van den Berg told Dutch outlet De Stentor: “I still support the decision to go to Middlesbrough. The city may not be the most beautiful in England.

“But it has been good for my development, because I have played a lot.

“I did tell my agent that he should only call if a club is very serious. Did he call after that? Yes. But I can’t say anything more about it.”

Middlesbrough’s clean sheet against the Swans proved to Edwards that Boro can cope with the imminent exit of van den Berg, but his presence from a squad depth perspective must be resolved before the window slams shut next month.
