Middlesbrough suffered a shocking 4-0 defeat at the hands of Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday evening.
Boro kicked off their 2025/26 Championship season with a 1-0 win over Swansea City.
It was by no means an amazing display, but three points in Rob Edwards’ first game in charge was positive.
However, what transpired against Doncaster Rovers in the Carabao Cup on August 12 was shocking and even saw BBC Tees poking fun at the result.
Middlesbrough transfer update after Doncaster Rovers
Middlesbrough did make some changes for the tie, but there were still plenty of first-team players involved against a completely changed Doncaster eleven.
Following the clash, manager Edwards has discussed transfers and how that result could have an impact.
Boro have made three signings so far this summer, and the ex-Luton Town boss has suggested that losing in such a manner in the cup doesn’t really change plans.
He said, as per the Northern Echo: “I know everyone will get bored of me saying that, but there will be people coming in.
“Tonight [the Doncaster defeat] doesn’t change anything. I’m pretty clear on where we’re at and what I think we need to do.
“I think Kieran and all the recruitment team are as well.
“I think tonight just highlighted one or two bits, but nothing that we didn’t already know. They made 11 changes tonight, so, listen, we know where we’re at and what we need.”

Do Middlesbrough have more transfer funds from Rav van den Berg sale
It was reported this week that Rav van den Berg has now agreed to leave Middlesbrough.
Edwards was asked about the Dutchman’s exit and whether his sale will give the club more funds for new signings.
He stated: “I think things are there anyway and we’re working hard behind the scenes.”
On how Van den Berg has acted during the transfer saga, Edwards shared: “It will benefit everyone, of course.
“You don’t want these things rolling on too long. It won’t affect the lads in the dressing room.
“The whole thing has been very amicable and he’s been good around the lads and good around training.
“He and I have kept a good relationship throughout it as well. We want that resolved as quickly as possible so we can all move forward.”
