Sam Morsy left in limbo two months after Ipswich Town exit amid shock Kuwait U-turn and obscure rule

Sam Morsy made the decision to leave Ipswich Town on a free transfer this summer. But, his adventure in Kuwait is already over in bizarre circumstances.

The former Ipswich Town captain led the Tractor Boys to the Premier League but was unable to help them stay in the division last term.

The two parties bid farewell just two months ago, with Morsy among the many Ipswich Town departures this summer.

Morsy opted to move to Kuwait SC in a surprising switch. But things have not gone to plan for the former Ipswich skipper, and he’s now without a club once more.

Sam Morsy leaves Kuwait SC after just two months

Reports coming out of Qatar (via TWTD) suggest Morsy is leaving Kuwait SC already. The 34-year-old has played just three games for his new club, and was sent off in his last appearance.

It is said Morsy’s lucrative contract has been terminated by mutual consent. Kuwait SC are looking to sign a different foreign player to fill the gap left behind.

Interestingly, Morsy made thinly-veiled comments about Ipswich Town after his departure, suggesting the club may have made things difficult for him towards the end of his time there.

Morsy had been captaining Kuwait SC but lasted just 30 minutes of a 1-1 draw on Sunday before being shown a red card.

The exact reasons for his decision to leave the club are unknown at this stage. However, we do know that Morsy will be unable to join a new club until the January transfer window opens.

The football rule you didn’t know that leaves Morsy without a club until January

The fact that Morsy cannot join another club until January left us a little surprised at first. But transfer expert Graeme Bailey has shed some light on the matter.

Turns out, players have to be free agents before the transfer window closes if they are to move freely in the interim before the next window opens.

So, Morsy would have had to be released by Kuwait SC prior to deadline day on September 1st if he were to be allowed to sign for a new club in the coming months.

As he was attached to Kuwait SC beyond the deadline, he will now have to wait for the January transfer window to open before choosing his next club.

Will he return to Ipswich Town? Given those suggestions of ill-treatment there, perhaps not. But, there’s always a chance we will see him back in the Championship in the New Year.
