Sheffield Wednesday now ready to make Man Utd ‘technical prodigy’ their first summer signing

Sheffield Wednesday have wasted little time outlining their first transfer target amid the expectation their embargoes will be lifted.

The Owls are now the only team in the Championship yet to make a signing this summer.

It comes after the EFL hit Sheffield Wednesday with multiple embargoes that greatly impacted their ability to complete deals.

Wednesday can only sign players on no-loan fees or secure free transfers with a wage cap of £7,000 a week.

However, it has now emerged that Sheffield Wednesday’s embargoes will be lifted when they pay off several debts with money they are receiving from the Premier League.

Following this news, they are being linked with their first potential signing of the summer on Friday evening.

Sheffield Wednesday want Manchester United gem Harry Amass

Even with the embargoes lifted, a ‘fee restriction’ sanction on any potential transfers would remain in place until 2027.

However, it will give the Yorkshire side more room to do work in the market, and they want a Manchester United gem.

Mike McGrath of the Telegraph has taken to social media to state that Sheffield Wednesday want to take Man Utd youngster Harry Amass on loan for the 2025/26 campaign.

As mentioned, McGrath says that the Owls ‘need EFL dispensation to register players’, but they are still trying to get deals done.

What Sheffield Wednesday fans need to know about Harry Amass

Still only 18, Amass is one of the brightest young talents to come out of United’s academy in recent years.

In September 2024, speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast, journalist Carl Anka detailed how highly rated the ‘technical prodigy’ was in Man United’s academy.

He stated: “So with Harry Amass, Laurie’s spoken quite well about this and written very well about this over the pre-season. I think Amass’ diminutive size means Ten Hag is not going to ferry him into games just yet.

“We know he’s a technical prodigy. Luke Shaw’s already spoken about it very well, but I think his inclusion on the pre-season tour and also the way he’s trained with the first team has more to do with the injuries to Shaw and Malacia than the fact that he might be ready for senior team football.

“Amass is a long-term project. Those around the academy absolutely give him the thumbs up, but I don’t think he’s in Ten Hag’s first team picture just yet.”

The teenager has broken into the Red Devils’ senior side, making seven appearances, five of which came in the Premier League last term.

He is a natural left-back and has some experience operating as a wing-back.
