After a disappointing 19th-place finish in League Two last season, marked by managerial upheaval, MK Dons are intent on a promotion push under new Head Coach Paul Warne.

Their ambition was initially seen in their pursuit of veteran striker David McGoldrick, a proven goalscorer Warne knew well from Derby County during the 2022/23 season.

McGoldrick was precisely the prolific forward MK Dons believed could fire them up the table. However, with McGoldrick’s move to Barnsley now confirmed, the Dons have swiftly changed course.

EFL Analysis, with exclusive information from our transfer expert Graeme Bailey, can confirm MK Dons are one of numerous clubs eyeing one player who could be their McGoldrick replacement.

Louis Appere could be the David McGoldrick replacement MK Dons are searching for

EFL Analysis can reveal that a host of clubs are battling to land Louis Appere from Stevenage.

Appere joined Stevenage last summer, but his time at The Lamex has been beset by injuries.

Now we can reveal that a number of sides are looking to land him, and Stevenage is willing to sell.

We can reveal that his former club, Northampton, are one of those keen, but there is strong interest from League Two, including relegated pair Bristol Rovers and Cambridge United.

MK Dons are also considering a move after they failed to complete a deal for David McGoldrick.

Why Louis Appere fits Paul Warne’s MK Dons blueprint

Paul Warne’s managerial philosophy at MK Dons demands energy, aggression, and a direct approach.

While David McGoldrick offered experience and skill, Louis Appere, despite recent injury woes, brings equally valuable attributes that fit Warne’s style.

During Appere’s successful Northampton Town spell, he showed a relentless work rate, blistering pace, and a knack for both scoring goals and setting them up, something Warne would welcome.

His ability to lead the line with high energy, harass defenders, and run in behind the opposition could be crucial for a team looking to overcome their lack of goals.

At 6’1″, Appere’s physicality also provides an aerial threat and hold-up play, adding a vital dimension to MK Dons’ attack.

He represents a younger alternative to McGoldrick, with a proven League Two track record that suggests he can thrive under Warne’s demanding regime and help the Dons climb the table.
