When Kamaldeen Sulemana will have his medical ahead of potential £18m move away from Southampton

This is a vital summer for Southampton and Will Still has to find the right balance between new and old faces before the Championship gets underway on 8 August.

The Saints face Wrexham in their opening game of the season, with the Red Dragons winning three successive promotions ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Southampton nearly broke Derby County’s point record in the Premier League last season, ending their top flight tenure with just 12 points and their new head coach has his work cut out to ensure that there is no hangover.

However, the departure of Kamaldeen Sulemana has been a near-certainty throughout the summer so far and now a move away looks as though it will be happening soon.

Kamaldeen Sulemana heads closer to Southampton exit as medical booked

Kamaldeen Sulemana is set to join Atalanta in the coming days, and a fresh report from Italy has claimed that his medical is very close to happening.

Tutto Atalanta have said that the winger is set to undergo a medical today (30 June) and the deal will be finalised by the end of the week.

The Daily Echo have also reported that the fee involved will start at €17.5m (£14.5m) but it could reach €21.5m (approximately £18m) through add-ons.

Atalanta are currently being managed by Ivan Juric, who took charge of Southampton in the latter stages of last season. However, he struggled to make an impact at St. Mary’s and departed before the end of the campaign.

Will Still is getting a very good deal from Atalanta

Considering the difficulties that the team had as a whole last year, bringing in an eight-figure fee for a player in the Championship is excellent for the Saints.

Southampton have to start planning for the future, not just this season, and if they are going to be challenging for promotion, they must bring in quality that will be ready to make the step up to the Premier League straight away.

There is no doubting that Sulemana would have been a huge threat in the Championship, but the Hampshire outfit cannot afford to turn down an offer of such significance, and his departure is the right one for all parties.
