As the potential promotion picture becomes clearer in the Championship, as Leicester City saw off a talented Birmingham City outfit 2-0, here are five things that you may have spotted from the contest.

Leicester City got off to the perfect start in the contest after Abdul Fatawu launched an emphatic effort past the grasp of Ryan Allsop.

Birmingham City notched their own chances in the remainder of the half, but it was the Foxes who went into the interval the happier of the two sides.

It was an even contest, but Birmingham City looked somewhat vulnerable in defence, leaving Birmingham City with opportunities to level up the tie. But it was Leicester City who would seal the win after Ricardo Pereira wrapped up the game with a composed finish in the 88th minute.

Leicester City managed to see the game out comfortably, earning a deserved three points ahead of the international break.

Following the contest, here are five things you may have missed…

Hamza Choudhury has surely cemented his place in Leicester City side

Marti Cifuentes handed Hamza Choudhury his first start for Leicester City of the 2025/26 Championship season in the 1-0 away victory against Charlton Athletic.

It was clear that, not only did Choudhury take his opportunity against Charlton by putting in a brilliant defensive showing, but he followed it up with a clean display against a fellow promotion contender.

The prospects of a difficult evening were there for Choudhury, having to face off against former teammate Demarai Gray, but the Leicester City full-back dealt with him comfortably.

From playing a key role in build-up play, to drawing in fouls from Gray, as well as Keshi Anderson later on, the Bangladeshi international hardly put a foot wrong, and proved Cifuentes correct to use him from the start.

Demarai Gray should have been switched out after his shoulder injury

Early on in the contest, Birmingham City marquee signing Demarai Gray took a nasty landing outside the box, which left him with a heavy blow.

It was clear that the knock affected him, whether it was how prohibited he was to rush into challenges, or how he was able to move with and without the ball.

Gray was moving gingerly for a large period of time after the injury, and even proceeded to go down 10 minutes later with the same concern.

Birmingham City were by no means playing with the equivalent of 10 men when he was on the field, but they could have turned to Keshi Anderson due to the discomfort the Blues winger was clearly in.

Abdul Fatawu is lethal at Championship level

Once again, Leicester City needed their star man to help them towards a bright start to the game, and he did just that.

After receiving the ball outside the box, Abdul Fatawu managed to shimmy it onto his favoured left foot and rifle it past Blues goalkeeper Ryan Allsop, which was deemed as a ‘fantastic finish’ by former Leicester City man Michael Morrison, via the BBC.

Fatawu starred in the Charlton Athletic win, and he put in an emphatic display against Birmingham City. Aside from the goal, he showed wonderful ability to make it a tough evening for Ethan Laird, and hopefully he can continue in that vein of form from Leicester City’s point of view.

Following the 2024/25 season that showed Leicester to be spineless and limited in front of goal, it is a breath of fresh air to see Fatawu light up the King Power Stadium and provide Marti Cifuentes’ side with the individual excellence needed.

Chris Davies must play to Kyogo Furuhashi’s strengths

The first half saw Leicester City take charge of proceedings, while the Blues struggled to fashion chances.

This left a number of Birmingham City players isolated in the final third, including Kyogo Furuhashi, who was notably quiet in the opening stanza.

Furuhashi can be a demonic presence when on his game, as was the case in the opening contest against Ipswich Town, but the service he was offered against Leicester City was next to none, making it impossible for him to make an impact.

Via SofaScore, the first half saw Kyogo managed just seven touches of the ball in the opening 45 minutes, losing the ball four times and not managing a single shot.

Blues fans are already aware of the Japanese international’s talent, but it notably affects Chris Davies’ side when they do not proactively find him in attack.

Jannik Vestergaard successfully quashed Birmingham City’s attacking threat

In what proved to be a solid defensive outing for Leicester City at the King Power Stadium, Jannik Vestergaard deserves plenty of plaudits for a brilliant showing at centre-back.

The Danish defender was often blamed for the Foxes’ struggles last season in the Premier League, but he has turned his fortunes around after a solid outing against Birmingham City.

Both Kyogo Furuhashi and Lewis Koumas could do very little in the final third for the Blues, and whilst this partially comes down to the lack of service they were receiving, it also has to be mentioned that Vestergaard was a constant presence, providing a number of crucial tackles and clearances.
