Chris Wilder’s immediate Sheffield United goal will strike further fear into Charlton Athletic fans

Charlton Athletic fans let out a collective groan after seeing Chris Wilder had been reappointed as Sheffield United manager.

The Addicks travel to Bramall Lane this Saturday for the first time in eight years to face the Championship’s basement club, which should have been a perfect opportunity for them to seal their first victory on the road this season.

However, as we’re sure you’re more than aware of by now, Ruben Selles was sacked after his winless start to the campaign that left United bottom of the table, and Wilder has since been re-appointed. That’s all in time for Nathan Jones’ side’s visit. Wilder doesn’t have a good record against Charlton, his former club, but he threatens to dump further frustration on the south Londoners.

Charlton have had a decent start to the campaign, but will feel as though they have missed golden opportunities to pick up more than their solitary league win this season. They dominated in the 1-0 loss to Leicester City and dropped two points late on against Millwall after Kayne Ramsay’s sending off. Wilder’s first aim in his third spell as Sheffield United manager certainly won’t be what they want to hear.

Chris Wilder’s first aim is to get a win under Sheffield United’s belts after horrific Championship start

Speaking to talkSPORT presenter Jim White, Wilder said: “First and foremost [the goal] is to win a game of football after the disappointing start that’s happened and to try and win a host of games to try and put yourself in contention, in and around there in January and see where it goes.

“We’re on the back foot a bit but it’s a tough division.”

Sheffield United fans will be hoping they can snap out of their dire losing streak and Wilder can reboot their former winning mentality.

This isn’t a guarantee, of course, and Charlton can spoil the party. Addicks fans on social media have certainly considered that narrative, but many have been rolling their eyes at the thought of facing the Blades’ new manager bounce.

Charlton Athletic fans joke club ‘can’t catch a break’ after Chris Wilder appointment news

Charlton faced Queens Park Rangers before the international break, with the R’s playing off the back of a 7-1 embarrassment at Coventry City. QPR bounced back by beating their London rivals 3-1.

Addicks fans fear the same will happen this weekend when Sheffield United look to seal their first victory of the season.

“Yeah we ain’t beating these. All eyes on Blackburn at home,” one wrote on X, looking ahead to Charlton’s next game already.

“Playing QPR straight after they lost 7-1 and now this,” a second said.

A third added: “We get QPR after a 7-1 mauling needing to bounce back and now Sheff U with a new manager (well, Wilder…) bounce. Cannot catch a break in this start to the season.”

Jones isn’t one to cower in the face of adversity, though, and Charlton fans will be hoping he and his side are relishing the opportunity to spoil the party on the red and white side of in South Yorkshire this weekend.
