Sheffield Wednesday are due to kick off their 2025/26 season against Leicester City, but there are concerns they will not have enough players to complete the game.
Henrik Pedersen has replaced Danny Rohl as the Owls’ manager ahead of their season-opener next week.
But the former assistant heads into the new campaign with a threadbare squad amid Dejphon Chansiri’s inability to pay players on time.
The likes of Michael Smith and Josh Windass have already joined new clubs, while Max Lowe has handed in his notice.
It leaves the Owls with a very limited group of senior players ahead of facing Leicester.

How EFL can punish Sheffield Wednesday for missing Leicester City fixture
The Star reports more players are thought to have handed in their notice, and there has been concern the game against the Foxes could be in jeopardy.
Young players can be included in the Owls’ squad list for the clash with Leicester, which should prevent the club from being unable to field a team.
But if players do refuse to play, there are multiple punishments the EFL can hit Sheffield Wednesday with.
The Star have outlined all 13, and they range from a potential points deduction to suspension from the league.
- – order a party to do or refrain from doing anything;
- – order a specific performance;
- – make a declaration on any matter to be determined;
- – issue a reprimand or warning as to the future conduct of a party;
- – order the payment of compensation to The League, any Club, any other club, Player or other person;
- – order a suspension of membership of The League;
- – order a deduction of points;
- – impose a financial penalty payable to The League;
- – recommend expulsion from membership of The League;
- – order a withdrawal or loss of benefit otherwise available to members of The League e.g. basic award or ladder payment;
- – impose an embargo on registration of Players;
- – order any other sanction as the Disciplinary Commission may think fit; and
- – order that interest be payable on any sums awarded under this Regulation for such period and at such rates as the Disciplinary Commission thinks fit.

Sheffield Wednesday player comments on strike
Amid the mounting problems at the club, Jamal Lowe has spoken out on Sheffield Wednesday.
In it, he issues a less-than-positive verdict, saying, “If you don’t laugh, you’ll cry.”
Lowe also commented on a potential strike from players at Sheffield Wednesday for the Leicester game.
But his answer was coy, saying that ‘the players haven’t spoken yet’ about something like that taking place.
