Bristol City fans are all gutted as ‘incredible servant’ Nahki Wells will leave the club this summer

Times are changing at Ashton Gate following the conclusion of the 2024/25 Championship, and now one crucial Bristol City star is set to depart.

Following the heavy defeat to Sheffield United in the Championship play-off semi-finals, the post-season summer has been turbulent for Bristol City.

Head coach Liam Manning was hired by Norwich to spearhead the Canaries’ 2025/26 season, calling time on his 85-game tenure at the club.

In the wake of Manning’s departure, former Barnsley boss Gerhard Struber was appointed by Bristol City to lead the Robins into next season.

However, Struber will be without one of Bristol City’s best players for his debut campaign in charge at Ashton Gate.

Bristol City fans are ‘gutted’ as Nahki Wells set to leave this summer

After weeks of speculation, Bristol City confirmed that veteran forward Nahki Wells will depart the club this summer following the conclusion of his contract at the end of June.

Wells ended last season as the Robins’ second-highest goalscorer behind Anis Mehmeti, with ten goals, and proved to be a pivotal member of Bristol City’s squad despite being 35.

Earlier this month, EFL Analysis revealed that Wells was likely to leave Bristol City after more than five years at the club, and now Bristol City’s talismanic striker will leave for nothing.

As news broke of Wells’ departure, the Bristol City faithful took to social media to share their heartache at losing the veteran frontman.

One Bristol City fan posted: Shame! Thanks Nahki, think you had at least one more good season to offer”, as another said: “Gutted about this one as was a brilliant mentor and influence in the club and also superb on the pitch for us.”

Another fan said: “Thanks for scoring some great goals and helping us in some rough patches. That QPR away game will always be special. A proper servant of our club.”

One Robins fan stated: “Incredible player and servant to our club, good luck on your next move – legend”.

In agreement, another fan said: “Great servant to the club and I will never forget those last minute limbs at Loftus Road.”

Looking ahead with the summer transfer window in mind, fans were quick to point towards the necessity for Wells’ replacement.

One fan said: “Let’s hope there’s someone of quality in the pipeline to replace him. Been a great player for the Club! Good luck Nahki”, as another posted: “With that we need 2 new centre forwards as the current crop haven’t shown their value in the last 12 months.”

Whichever striker Bristol City signs as Wells’ successor, they will struggle to recreate the goal record, and lasting impact he leaves behind at Ashton Gate.

Nahki Wells’ goalscoring statistics from time at Bristol City

Since Bristol City signed Wells from Burnley in 2020 for £5m, the Bermuda international striker has cemented himself as a Robins legend.

In 237 appearances, Wells scored 48 goals and notched 19 assists, with ten of those strikes coming this term under Manning’s tutelage.

Ahead of the play-off semi-final against Sheffield United, Wells told Bristol Live: “Hopefully, God willing, it’s not my last game for Bristol City, but at the minute that is the case.”

Unfortunately for Wells and the Robins faithful, that 6-0 aggregate loss has proven to be his final game for Bristol City during his five-and-a-half years in the West Country.
