Championship experts make ‘frightening’ Sheffield United verdict after Bristol City hammering

Sheffield United’s start to the season did not go as planned after they were hammered by Bristol City on the opening day of the season.

It was a disastrous start to Ruben Selles‘ tenure as Bristol City got revenge for the Championship play-off semi-final defeat last season.

Gerhard Struber’s side dismantled Sheffield United with worrying ease as the hosts completely folded at Bramall Lane.

Some Blades fans want Selles sacked already just one game into the season, while others have directed their frustrations towards the board.

Sheffield United’s squad depth is a cause for concern

The summer has been an odd one for Selles so far, with Sheffield United only making minor improvements in the transfer window.

They’ve also lost Anel Ahmedhodzic to Feyenoord and the Second Tier pod duo believe that the Blades’ squad depth is considerably weaker than it used to be.

“A really poor start from them threw up more red flags, probably about the quality of the squad,” they said.

“Ruben Selles is going to come under the microscope and rightly so, it’s his team. That being said, the quality of the squad is lacking.

“Bristol City were miles ahead which is a frightening thing considering that pre-season expectations were high.”

Ruben Selles refuses to blame lack of transfers at Sheffield United

Plenty of work needs to be done at Bramall Lane in order to get the squad up to speed.

11 senior players have left the Blades since the end of last season, with only three senior options and two young Bulgarian signings with untapped potential.

However, Selles refused to use the lack of transfers as an excuse as to why they were battered on the opening day.

He said: “I think we were good enough and competent enough today to get a better result and a better performance.

“I think we should not change our strategy because of one game but we need the players we need as soon as possible. That was the point I made before this result.

“For today, let’s not make excuses. We lost a game, we were not good enough. I take responsibility for and moving forward we’ll try to get better the next game.
