Daniel Farke knows Leeds United need ‘perfect away performance’ to defeat Plymouth Argyle and secure Championship title

Leeds United face Plymouth Argyle in the final game of the Championship season for the Whites, with Daniel Farke’s side eyeing a title and 100 points to cap off a terrific campaign.

Plymouth are not mathematically relegated, but Miron Muslic’s team have too much to do in order to survive due to the goal difference swing required. Leeds, meanwhile, are hoping to get close to 100 goals, too.

The Whites and Argyle will be two leagues apart next term, with the league’s most potent attack (93 goals) coming up against the most meagre defence (86 goals). Not only that, but they have faced one another more times than Leeds have faced any other side since relegation.

Only Norwich City have come up against Leeds as often since 2023, with Leeds doing battle with the Pilgrims four times last season and twice this term. They have won every league game thus far, with just one draw to speak of.

Daniel Farke’s Plymouth Argyle warning to Leeds United

Leeds hadn’t played Plymouth for over 16 years before a 2-1 league win at Elland Road in November 2023, then following that up with a 1-1 FA Cup draw at Elland Road, and a 4-1 victory in the replay at Home Park.

This season, Leeds smashed Wayne Rooney’s side 3-0 in a fixture where their visitors failed to register a shot on goal. Muslic’s side won’t be as toothless this time around, but Daniel Farke has tasted the difficulty of this fixture before and the long distance to travel down to Devon.

Speaking via The Yorkshire Post in February of last year, he outlined the problems Leeds faced as well as the solutions they found in Crysencio Summerville’s and Georginio Rutter’s magic. He said: “It was nearly the perfect away performance.

“We were so dominant, we created so many chances, scored the goals but we also hit the crossbar twice and the post. The scoreline flattered us, yes but not that we had to play 120 minutes and it was also a replay.

“I want to say firstly congratulations to Plymouth, a brave side, a confident side, they never know when they are beaten. They found a way in both games to get a foot in the door although we were so dominant.

“We dominated the second half, I just saw the statistics that we had 82 per cent of the possession. But Plymouth had the free-kick and they managed to score so they were pretty effective.

“Plymouth scored out of nothing but we showed great heart to win this. We invested so much energy and mentality into the game and showed a real will to win.

“We took risks and pressed them high and also defended with discipline. I am happy with the performance as we gave everything.”

It may have to be gritty at points, with Muslic unlikely to set up a team who will just roll over. However, this is a Leeds side brimming with confidence, oozing class, and at their free-flowing best at present — having scored 10 goals in the last two league fixtures combined.

Should they win by a big enough margin, Leeds could also break Reading FC’s record for goal difference.

The Leeds players who will play their last game for the club this weekend against Plymouth

The Whites are eyeing the title after they celebrated promotion in style but this will be goodbye for some of the squad, too. That includes the likes of Josuha Guilavogui and Sam Byram unless they sign new deals.

It also includes Junior Firpo at left-back, who is the club’s only specialist left-back. For that reason, a short contract ought to be considered for Firpo as an extension for year one of Premier League football.

If it isn’t, he could be another to feature for the last time. There are other players not out of contract, though, who could also be in their last weeks as Leeds players. The club should be somewhat ruthless when it comes to their approach to recruitment this summer.

The likes of Illan Meslier, Patrick Bamford, Max Wober, and possibly others could all be featuring for the final time in some capacity in a Leeds shirt. They have some huge decisions to make in the summer, including those that could impact the club in both the long and short-term.
