Leeds United got to do something they haven’t since 1990 against Bristol City last night

Leeds United celebrated promotion in style last night during a 4-0 hammering of Bristol City in their final home game of the season.

The Whites end the season with the best home record in the division by a distance after winning their 18th match of the campaign at Elland Road, making it ten goals in a week from Championship fixtures in West Yorkshire.

Daniel Farke’s side are ‘miles’ better than Burnley in the eyes of some and they made that clear against the fifth-placed team in the division with a resounding win to really show the difference in class to Bristol City.

The Premier League will soon be their attention, which is the next competitive fixture Elland Road will play host to. It can be unforgiving and Paul Merson has offered his advice to them, but they are a side breaking records set under Marcelo Bielsa and on their way to a second title in five years.

Leeds celebrations are for the first time in 35 years

Sam Parkin predicted a tight game but it was anything but. Liam Manning admitted his side were ‘soft’ and his side weren’t able to overcome a ‘terrible’ record against Leeds as they extended a 46-year record against their visitors.

Though many are frustrated that Largie Ramazani has not been utilised more frequently this season, it has been a campaign to remember for all the right reasons for Leeds fans. They put on a show for their fans to celebrate going up last week.

This was the first game since that particular feat, and Bristol City were perhaps overawed by the atmosphere but Daniel Farke’s side put in the performance of champions in the end, sparking wild scenes at full-time.

Many of the favourite songs were played over the tannoy, including Marching on Together, Love Will Tear Us Apart, I Predict a Riot, and more. Having a celebration party is something which has not been done properly since 2010 after promotion from League One.

As shown by LUFCDATA above, Leeds have won nine promotions in their history. The most recent came during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, meaning the games were played without crowds and there was no parade to speak of due to safety concerns.

Many fans went to Elland Road anyway, but others could not. It means that 2025 is the first time fans have been able to mark the occasion properly by commemorating and toasting the players in person inside the ground.

Being able to do that is perhaps something that has gone under the radar in terms of its importance, with many missing out on what was a special moment of ending the 16-year exile from English football’s elite tier.

Leeds have had an absolute outpouring of emotion on both occasions but this time around is perhaps a double-shot of it, given it wasn’t done properly the first time. 1990 is before many current fans were born or able to remember it, but that was the last occasion of a promotion from the second tier honoured well.

They did it in style against one of the other ‘best’ teams in the division to boot…

Ethan Ampadu talks up the title and celebrations so far

Promoted duo Leeds and Burnley know the task at hand to survive in the top flight, but Farke’s latest comments indicate the Whites want to become an “established Premier League side” again and will spend accordingly.

For now, the focus is on the fact Leeds can get to 100 points with Burnley to break records, but also break an all-time record set by Reading 19 years ago. That is something Leeds captain Ethan Ampadu took to Twitter/X to reinforce, as well as when speaking to Sky Sports.

Ampadu also said: “We’re making up for it now. Tonight was all about celebrating with the fans. This club is really special. It’s a massive honour to play for this club.

“We’ve got one more moment to achieve. We back ourselves. It’s within touching distance.”

The title would be the crowning moment on a spectacular season, with just Plymouth Argyle standing in their way for that glory and further acclaim from a jubilant yet expectant fanbase.

Leeds’ ruthlessness and desire to tick off five wins on the spin at the business end of a season has been truly and remarkably impressive.
