Leeds United told they do one thing ‘miles’ better than Burnley by EFL expert

Leeds United were ‘rampant’ in their 6-0 win against Stoke City at Elland Road, with promotion to the Premier League secured over an excellent Easter Weekend.

After a recent run of one win in six, Leeds are now unbeaten in eight with five wins in that time. At the business end of the campaign, it’s fair to say Daniel Farke’s side turned it on in style to secure promotion.

Leeds have only lost once in 26 league outings and are now heading for a two-game shoot-out with Burnley for the title. The Clarets secured promotion for both sides after a 2-1 win over Sheffield United on a perfect weekend for both of the top two.

They are level on points and can break numerous records as they go in search of the Championship title. Leeds’ vastly superior goal difference means they know they must just win twice to ensure the crown is theirs.

George Elek backs Leeds United for the title ahead of Burnley

Both Burnley and Leeds have been outstanding this season, and they have also both won the Championship title in recent memory. Burnley secured their crown two years ago and Leeds back in 2020 under Marcelo Bielsa.

EFL experts Ali Maxwell and George Elek of the Not The Top 20 podcast have had their say on the situation at the top of the table, with Burnley and Leeds now fighting it out on their own after seeing off Sunderland and the Blades.

Elek said: “Delighted we don’t have to deal with any ‘Leeds, Leeds are falling apart again’ — although I’m sure they’ll find a way not to win the title in the next couple of games.

“Whether or not either club cares about winning the title, I’m not entirely sure. I think Leeds probably will do. I think they will want show that they are the best team in the league once the dust settles — and for Burnley as well — from the promotion party.”

On Stoke and the season as a whole, he added: “They were at their relentless best. This is what Leeds are all about. Leeds, at home, are what? Probably a mid-table Premier League side in terms of the distance they put between themselves and their opposition.

“They are so impressive. They are rampant consistently. I’m really intrigued to see how they’re going to get on next season. Between both boxes, they have been miles clear of anyone else. There’s an alternative universe, in my mind, where Leeds could’ve set records this season.”

Leeds’ underlying numbers highlight their dominance over Burnley

At one stage, it looked as though the automatic promotion race could go to the wire and may experts hoped it would be decided on the final day of the season. The only thing that looks like doing that is now the title, which both will have enormous appetite to go and get,

Simply put, Leeds have been one of the most dominant and impressive sides the Championship has ever seen. One way to understand that is to look at the xGD (expected goal difference) of each side in recent history compared to the current duo.

1Leeds United24/251.3
2Fulham21/221.1

5Leeds United23/240.8
6Leicester City23/240.7

As seen above, Leeds are incredibly dominant between both boxes, particularly at home. Only Birmingham City have accrued more points at home in the top four tiers of English football, highlighting the gulf in class when Leeds are able to impose themselves on a game at Elland Road.

Ironically, Leeds have multiple occasions where they have ranked well on this metric in recent memory. Farke and Bielsa have overseen magnificent campaigns in West Yorkshire. By contrast, Burnley’s is 0.4 this season.
