Darren Ferguson admits Peterborough United missing main ingredient after worst possible start

Peterborough’s 2025/26 season couldn’t have started any worse – and Darren Ferguson agrees.

The Posh – who introduced a new badge this season – managed to land ex-Leeds United player Tom Lees this summer, but find themselves rock bottom of the League One table, picking up just one point so far after a 1-1 draw with Bradford City.

Their defence of the Vertu Motors Trophy isn’t going well either, with them losing to 10-men Leyton Orient 3-1 in the first group stage match of the competition on Tuesday.

Peterborough manager Ferguson, who is two-and-a-half years into his fourth spell as Posh manager, was brutally honest about the position his side find themselves in after the cup defeat.

Peterborough United missing ‘belief’ this season, says Darren Ferguson

Orient saw Azeem Abdulai sent off in the first half of their EFL Trophy clash with the Posh, but still managed to score three goals after going down to 10 men. Ferguson’s side scored one via Harley Mills just before half-time, but couldn’t find the net after that despite having 21 shots in total.

Speaking to BBC Cambridge Sport afterwards, the Peterborough boss was asked how he felt after Peterborough’s ‘worst possible start’ to their Trophy defence.

“Yep, absolutely, couldn’t have put it better myself,” he said. “You get a break with the red card and think ‘ok, go on and win the game’ to get a bit of confidence back into the camp which is clearly missing.

“It went horribly wrong and maybe in some sense put more pressure on the players in some ways because against 10 men we’d be expected to win. So yeah, it couldn’t have gone any worse.”

He continued: “It wasn’t through the want of trying, I have to say. It was just that real important ingredient you need as a footballer. That belief is just not there.”

Posh will continue through the international break and face Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Peterborough United suffer worst start to League One season in club history

Back in the league, Posh still haven’t found a way to win this season either.

In fact, according to Transfermarkt, they are having the club’s worst start to a campaign in League One after six games ever.

Their record so far at this point in the season is the 14th worst of any club since the league’s rebranding in 2004, with Bolton in 2019/20 holding the crown for the worst with -11 points after a -12 points deduction at the start of the season and a goal difference of -17.

Posh currently have a goal difference of -9 after scoring two and letting in 11, with one point on the board.
