The 2025/26 Championship season is only weeks away from kicking off, and Sheffield Wednesday’s preparations couldn’t have gone any worse.
Transfer embargoes, a mass exodus of players leaving Hillsborough, uncertainty surrounding the future of Danny Rohl, and zero signings through the door have all led many to believe Sheffield Wednesday will be relegated from the Championship.
The problems all started this summer when Dejphon Chansiri failed to pay his players, with the EFL handing the Owls a transfer embargo, which meant a max wage restriction of £7k-per-week on new signings and only being able to capture players on a free transfer or loan without a fee involved.
Supporters are desperate for Chansiri to sell the club, and while there has been takeover interest in Sheffield Wednesday, they are still no closer to finding a suitable buyer.
But it’s become clear that the longer the Malaysian is in charge at Hillsborough, the more the South Yorkshire side will suffer.

Sheffield Wednesday’s relationships with Premier League clubs destroyed by Chansiri
The loan market is an avenue most Championship clubs explore. Sheffield Wednesday are the prime example, as last summer, they signed James Beadle on loan from Brighton while loaning Shea Charles from Southampton.
As their transfer restrictions mean they cannot pay a percentage of loan players’ wages, it is unfortunately difficult for them to capture talented youngsters from a Premier League club.
But equally, Chansiri’s failure to pay his current Sheffield Wednesday squad and staff has destroyed any chances of the Owls being able to take top-flight players on loan, according to finance expert Kieran Maguire.
“If I was a Premier League club looking to loan a player to a Championship this season, and lots of them are, would Sheffield Wednesday be the top of my list? I suspect not,” Maguire said on the Wednesday Til’ I Die podcast.
“Because they have a professional responsibility towards the young men that they send out on loan, that they’re operating in the right environment, that they are going to be paid, and also from that Premier League club’s point of view, they want to get paid. It is a business.”
Sheffield Wednesday set for more misery
Due to the problems created by Chansiri and his financial troubles, Sheffield Wednesday fans are watching their squad get decimated, having seen the likes of Anthony Musaba, Djeidi Gassama, Michael Smith, and Callum Paterson leave the club recently.
While Windass is close to joining Wrexham, Gassama starred on his Champions League debut for Rangers, scoring a wonderful goal after coming off the bench.
With the prospect of the players not being paid for July, more could walk out of the club, and Akin Famewo is already in talks with Hull City.
As it stands, Wednesday will start the Championship season in the worst way possible, and only a change in ownership could increase their positivity.
