EFL accused of double standards as Sheffield Wednesday fiasco causes Championship figurehead to hit out

Sheffield Wednesday’s situation has been dire for some months now, and Hull City’s sporting director Jared Dublin believes it may be impacting his club too.

Sheffield Wednesday have been placed under multiple embargoes amid owner Dejphon Chansiri‘s calamitous running of the club.

After going unpaid, several players left the club this summer, and unable to sign players for transfer fees, the Owls have had to make do with youngsters, and a couple of loan deals.

Despite their perilous situation, Sheffield Wednesday beat Portsmouth 2-0 last weekend to pick up their first win of the season, now sitting 23rd in the Championship table ahead of Sheffield United.

Hull City chief claims unfair EFL treatment amid Sheffield Wednesday crisis

Another club who have faced EFL sanctions this summer are Hull City. Hull City were given a three-window transfer ban by the EFL but that ban has since been reduced to two transfer windows. Still, the Tigers’ sporting director Jared Dublin thinks the EFL have acted with the Sheffield Wednesday situation in mind.

Talking to BBC Humberside, he said of Hull’s transfer window ban reduction: “I believe the circumstances around Sheffield Wednesday played a part. Whether that’s conscious, subconscious, or as a larger concern within regards to ownership within the Championship specifically.

“Had this happened without the Sheffield Wednesday situation, would things have been different? Legally, they will say ‘no’ but from my perspective there’s a big drive from the EFL to make sure these situations like Sheffield Wednesday don’t happen.

“I don’t think we are anywhere near that level of financial strain and stress and disappointment but we’ve been given our ruling and we have to live with it.”

The latest on Sheffield Wednesday as Dejphon Chansiri misses payments

The situation at Hillsborough is certainly worrying. It’s obvious that the EFL don’t want that to happen to any other club but whether or not they’re mistreating Hull City because of the Wednesday situation remains to be seen, if not an unfair claim.

Nonetheless, Chansiri continues to cast huge doubt over Sheffield Wednesday’s future. This week, it was reported that Chansiri has missed another payment deadline for ‘football and non-football’ matters.

In wake of the latest developments, Sheffield Wednesday skipper Barry Bannan has taken aim at Chansiri, saying in a recent interview: “I have been through this summer and through preseason asking questions, questions, questions, but it’s got to the point now where really I’ve had to stop asking because I’m not getting anywhere.

“I’m just concentrating on the football and trying to keep the lads together and happy, and the manager is obviously doing a great job.

“I remember speaking to one of my mates yesterday, and I was saying ‘you should never be getting to pay day at a Championship club and wondering if you’re going to get paid or not’. It’s mental.”

This weekend, Sheffield Wednesday host QPR and Hull City head to Watford.
