EFL to step in with temporary Sheffield Wednesday solution amid Dejphon Chansiri wages failure

The English Football League are considering taking drastic financial action against Sheffield Wednesday to pay their creditors.

Sheffield Wednesday have endured a horrific summer ahead of the 2025/26 Championship campaign, one which looks set to get worse before it gets better.

In the dugout, Henrik Pedersen has replaced Danny Rohl as Owls head coach, who has inherited a nightmare at Hillsborough with a plethora of key figures exiting the club.

Under the disastrous ownership of Dejphon Chansiri, the latest development has resulted in the possibility that Sheffield Wednesday players could refuse to play, after the club informed some players that they will not be paid their July wages on time.

Now, the EFL are poised to step in with drastic financial action against Chansiri, in their quest to help the players and staff at Sheffield Wednesday.

EFL set to withhold money from Sheffield Wednesday to pay club’s debts

Three embargoes have hung over Hillsborough this summer at one point, but now just one remains for transfer fees, but that could change if the aforementioned wages issue continues.

With just over a week until Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship season kicks off against Leicester City, the financial issues off the pitch pale in comparison to the problems on the pitch.

In another embarrassment for the Owls, the North Stand at Hillsborough will be closed until further notice until work is done to fix the structural issues, which will impact 9000 season ticket holders.

The EFL could personally sanction Chansiri, and now, the EFL are likely to take action against Sheffield Wednesday over the debts they owe by withholding money from the Owls to pay the club’s creditors.

Sheffield Wednesday reporter Joe Crann revealed in the Sheffield Star that: “The English Football League look set to withhold money from Sheffield Wednesday in order to pay off some of the club’s debts.

“The Star understands that the EFL is planning to take control of some of the club’s finances in order to pay their creditors.

“The League have the power to pay the club’s creditors, including players, staff and other clubs owed money, rather than sending TV money and other such amounts to the club itself. That is believed to be one the next steps that could be taken.”

The EFL have the power to take such measures under Article 48 of the EFL’s rules and regulations,

With the Leicester clash just around the corner, the fears about what team Pedersen will field next Sunday are equally as concerning as the latest financial issue for the Owls.

Henrik Pedersen has an impossible task at Sheffield Wednesday

After Rohl left Sheffield Wednesday, Dane Pedersen was appointed in charge of the Owls.

This week, Pedersen told Sheffield Wednesday’s website: “Is this going to be easy? No! We are maybe in ‘rough waters’ at the moment but as a proud Dane I can tell you that like our Viking ancestors, stormy seas don’t bother us too much.

“You have to get used to it, to weather the storm to get to calmer waters.

“This is a really great club, with great fans and I will do anything and everything to help us thrive and grow.”

‘Rough waters’ is the understatement of the century from the newly appointed Sheffield Wednesday boss.

A summer exodus of top talent, potential for further EFL embargoes, Max Lowe handing in his Sheffield Wednesday notice, and the contractual uncertainty surrounding skipper Barry Bannan are just some factors that point towards it being a disastrous season ahead in S6.
