Gustavo Puerta’s chances of returning to Hull City evidently clear after Bayer Leverkusen decision

Gustavo Puerta was a huge fan favourite for Hull City after his exciting loan spell last season.

He played 31 times for the Tigers and even had an obligation to sign Puerta for £3m this summer.

However, due to the EFL’s imposed transfer restrictions on Hull, which prevents them from signing players for any fees, the deal is yet to go through.

Hull have had that transfer restriction cut down but it seems that Puerta’s future is clear after Bayer Leverkusen’s latest decision.

Bayer Leverkusen register Gustavo Puerta after returning to training

By his own admission during an interview with Colombian outlet AS in May, Puerta wasn’t sure if he would be returning to the MKM Stadium, saying: “In football, there are all kinds of rumours, but right now my focus is on enjoying a little family vacation, continuing to prepare for next season, and then seeing what happens in the future.”

His future now seems to be clearer though after journalist Pipe Serra confirmed that Puerta had been registered for Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga campaign and that he had been in full training with Erik ten Hag’s side.

Hull City should move on from Gustavo Puerta

Although it would’ve been great to get a player of the Colombian’s quality back to Hull, it’s fair to say that the ship has sailed.

As frustrating as it may be to miss out on a player who was expected to join due to the clause in his contract, Sergej Jakirovic’s side have still started the Championship season strongly.

The addition of the likes of John Lundstram has also compensated somewhat. Of course, it’s still early days, but maybe it’s time to move on.
