Honest Cardiff City fans tell Sheffield Wednesday what to expect from new signing Ethan Horvath

Sheffield Wednesday are set to sign Ethan Horvath from Cardiff City, but the US international has been given a mixed review from Bluebirds fans.

Ahead of this weekend’s clash with Wrexham, Sheffield Wednesday were hit with an injury to Pierce Charles.

The Sheffield Wednesday shot-stopper was one of the few shining lights in the squad after the brilliant back-end of the 2024/25 season which saw him keep James Beadle out of the side, as well as become a prominent starter for Northern Ireland.

Charles was linked with a Premier League move, with several clubs interested in attaining the youngster.

Whilst Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen made it clear that he could not afford to lose Charles in the summer window, the injury sustained by him looks to be just as costly.

Thankfully, Sheffield Wednesday have found a replacement in Ethan Horvath, but he has not quite been handed raving reviews by Cardiff City fans.

What Cardiff City fans think about Sheffield Wednesday signing Ethan Horvath

As revealed by Alex Crook, Sheffield Wednesday have signed Ethan Horvath as a replacement for Pierce Charles following his injury.

Further details were provided by Joe Crann, who confirmed that there is ‘talk of a longer-term deal through to January’.

It would be incredibly difficult for Sheffield Wednesday to replicate the talents of Charles in their current situation, and it appears that Horvath has endured a difficult spell in South Wales with Cardiff City.

Taking to X, one Cardiff City fan said: “I’m not a Horvath hater but yeah no any doubts about Wednesday going down are gonna be put to bed with this signing, they are in big trouble if he’s in the sticks.”

The pessimistic opinions of Bluebird fans continued, as one said: “He’s not as bad as people claim imo, but he’s still quite poor and isn’t near championship-level.”

They continued, suggesting that it ‘didn’t always quite work out for him at Cardiff’ after what was a ‘sorry’ spell at the club.

How long Pierce Charles is expected to be out

When discussing the crushing blow of Pierce Charles being out of action at Sheffield Wednesday, Henrik Pedersen, via The Star, said: “We are not quite sure for this yet,” Pedersen said. “He has been seen by a specialist and now we are waiting for the answer on which direction it will go, so it can still go in both directions.

“I saw that he was named and I know that the club are in contact with the national team from Northern Ireland. I am sure they will find a way to handle this situation.”

However long Charles is set to be out, which will be determined on whether he needs surgery or not, will still be a crushing blow for Sheffield Wednesday, who are now paying the price for their significant lack of squad depth.

Sheffield Wednesday had a wealth of suitable goalkeeper options last season under Danny Rohl, having both James Beadle and Ben Hamer in addition to Charles, and such an issue then would have been cushioned.

As many things have already, it is yet another concern that points back to the issue-plagued summer under Dejphon Chansiri and the damage that has been done in recent months at the club.
