Hull City manager search update as ‘likely’ names emerge as potential Ruben Selles successors

Hull City chief Acun Ilicali already has an eye on a few coaches ahead of the 2025/26 Championship season.

News broke yesterday that Hull City had decided to sack boss Ruben Selles, with Tigers owner Acun Ilicali supposedly unhappy with the run of form the Spanish coach led the side on before narrowly escaping from relegation.

Hull City fans are far from happy with the decision to sack Selles, but some are reserving their judgement for when the former coach’s successor is brought in.

There are several contenders for the Hull City job, and it now looks as though Ilicali has an eye on a few names that he would like to employ, including a former Tigers player from the Premier League days, as well as a recently relegated Championship man.

Ruben Selles potential successors named as Hull City eye boss with EFL experience

The next appointment for Hull City is crucial, and many will hope that Ilicali does not go down a similar route to when he brought in Shota Averladze and Tim Walter, two managers with significant inexperience in England who ultimately failed with their task.

It looks as though Ilicali has learned from his mistakes with the potential names that are being considered, per a report by the Hull Daily Mail.

The names that are ‘likely to be considered’ to be Selles’ successor are Dean Smith, Miron Muslic, Alex Neil and Ryan Mason, with the latter being the only without any experience as a head coach in the Championship, but has previous with Hull City, playing for them in the 2016/17 season before his career was cut short due to injuries.

It is also understood that Steve Cooper was reportedly wanted, but he is holding out for a Premier League move, whilst Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl was previously a target, but the Tigers were put off because of the sizeable compensation package keeping him at the club.

Contenders for Hull job show that Acun Ilicali has learned from previous mistake

From an outside perspective, Hull City’s recent lack of faith in managers has certainly been bizarre, with the reigns of Liam Rosenior and Ruben Selles surprisingly cut short. Between these two coaches with EFL experience, Ilicali took a chance on both Averladze and Walter, with both decisions seeing Hull take a step back from their end goal, which is promotion to the Premier League.

Thankfully, it looks as though Ilicali won’t be taking a chance on a coach with no EFL experience for the next crucial appointment due to the names that have been conjured up as potential successors. Providing that the previous issues of leaving recruitment too late last season are also seen to, Hull City could find themselves with a promising season ahead of them, but there is still plenty of work to do.
