Sam Szmodics has withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland’s squad ahead of The Boys in Green’s World Cup qualifier against Armenia.

The Ipswich Town attacking midfielder has played in all five of his club’s games so far in what has been a tricky start for Kieran McKenna and co. That was despite Szmodics injuring his arm against Southampton.

The 29-year-old started the first of the country’s two World Cup qualifiers this month, playing in midfield in the 2-2 draw against Hungary on Saturday. He came off with 12 minutes to go, with Swansea City’s Adam Idah scoring the equaliser in added time.

Now, Szmodics and the Republic of Ireland national team have confirmed he has withdrawn from the squad before Tuesday’s clash with Armenia.

Sam Szmodics leaves Ireland camp due to injury, he hopes it’s ‘nothing too serious’

On Sunday, it was confirmed Szmodics has had to leave the camp due to injury.

Writing on X, the former Blackburn Rovers goalscorer said on his unspecified injury: “Gutted to be leaving camp early fingers crossed it’s nothing too serious. Good luck to the boys in Armenia.”

In a statement, the Republic of Ireland confirmed the reason behind the withdrawal.

“Josh Honohan has been called up to the squad to face Armenia,” it said. “The Shamrock Rovers defender comes into the squad for the trip to Yerevan with Sammie Szmodics ruled out through injury. All other members of the squad set to travel this morning.”

His replacement Josh Honohan is uncapped at senior level for the Republic of Ireland.

Ipswich Town stars playing for the Republic of Ireland

Dara O’Shea, Kasey McAteer, Jack Taylor and Chiedozie Ogbene are all still on duty with The Boys in Green.

O’Shea, who played for Ipswich in the Premier League, started for Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side in the comeback against Hungary.

Tractor Boys newbie McAteer came on for his seventh cap, with the other Town players also coming off the bench.

While Szmodics returns to England, the other four Ipswich aces travel to Armenia for their next fixture.
