Jack Wilshere breaks silence after leaving Norwich City and reveals reason behind his decision

Arsenal legend Jack Wilshere took charge of Norwich City towards the end of the season after Johannes Hoff Thorup was sacked.

Norwich City enjoyed a positive start to the season under Johannes Hoff Thorup, with their forwards Borja Sainz and Josh Sargent in impressive form.

However, a downturn in form saw Thorup relieved of his duties in April, leaving his Canaries tenure with a 30 percent win percentage record across his 47-game spell.

Arsenal legend Jack Wilshere thus took temporary charge of the Canaries, overseeing a goalless stalemate at Middlesbrough and a 4-2 win over Cardiff City on the final day.

Despite the Norwich hierarchy feeling positive about Wilshere, he will not become the next permanent boss at Carrow Road, and the 33-year-old coach has now broken his silence on his Canaries departure.

Jack Wilshere reveals reason behind Norwich City departure

EFL Analysis understood that Wilshere’s camp had been confident about the permanent proposition and believed the Englishman had done enough to take the job.

The player reaction to Wilshere amongst the Canaries squad had also been hugely positive in the wake of Thorup’s departure.

Under Wilshere’s interim charge, Norwich picked up four points from six on offer against Boro and the Bluebirds, ending the season 13th in the Championship table.

However, with Norwich now pursuing targets to become Thorup’s permanent successor, Wilshere has broken his silence on the situation and revealed the reason behind his departure.

On his Instagram page, Wilshere said: “I can confirm that I have today left Norwich City in order to pursue my own career as a Head Coach.

“I’d like to thank everyone at Norwich for the opportunity to continue my coaching journey with you all, I built some relationships that will continue to grow.

“Thank you to the incredible Canaries fans for welcoming me so warmly from the very first moment I joined.

“I’ve loved every minute of my time at the club and I’d like to wish you all the very best for the future. Jack.”

In the wake of Wilshere’s confirmation, Norwich also announced the news with some telling comments from their sporting director, who is “sad” to see the promising manager leave Carrow Road.

Norwich City sporting director ‘sad’ to see Jack Wilshere depart

The next step in Wilshere’s career remains unclear, but given his pedigree as a 125-game Arsenal star and growing calibre as a head coach, another Championship club could soon take a chance on the Englishman for next season.

Praise has been high for departing Wilshere from the Norwich hierarchy as the former England international leaves Carrow Road with a glowing reference.

Canaries Sporting Director Ben Knapper told Norwich’s media: “Jack made a big impact here in the time he was with us. He built great connections with our players and staff, and we’re all sad to see him move on.

“We were all very grateful for him stepping in as our interim head coach for the final two games of the season, but we understand and respect his desire to further explore opportunities elsewhere.

“He leaves with our very best wishes, and we’ll follow his progress closely. I’ve no doubt he’ll go on to have a very successful coaching career in the senior game.”
