Joe Root mocks Sheffield Wednesday as terrible Sheffield United start is questioned

For supporters of both Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, the opening month of the 2025/26 Championship campaign has been a nightmare.

The pair occupy the bottom two places in the Championship, with the Blades currently at the very foot of the table with five losses from five, while the Owls did draw 2-2 against Wrexham last month.

Ruben Selles has been sacked by Sheffield United, and Chris Wilder is closing in on becoming the new Blades boss for the third time in his career.

However, supporters will want to see an improvement quickly, including England cricketer Joe Root, who has opened up on his team’s start to the season, while also throwing a cheeky quip at neighbours Wednesday.

Joe Root makes Sheffield Wednesday joke despite Sheffield United issues

Despite Sheffield Wednesday’s off-field issues, there has been no love lost between the Blades and Owls, with Root not taking too much pity on those in S6.

Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast, the legendary England batter was asked by retired cricketer Michael Vaughn who will finish higher in the Championship this season, United or Wednesday.

Root replied: “Will Sheffield Wednesday finish this year? I think that’s the honest truth isn’t it?”

Vaughn, who is an Owls fan himself, was quick to point out that his team do have a point more than Sheffield United, but he was once again taken down by the Blades supporter, who said: “For now, you might be getting docked at some point.

“It was an interesting year [last season] getting 92 points to get to the play-off final. Any other season we probably go up automatically, and then we find ourselves with the new manager at the start of this year. So, we’ll see how things pan out.

“We’ve made a couple of good signings, so hopefully that can turn things around, but it has to happen quite quickly I guess.”

The two Sheffield clubs will not face off until November

With Wilder closing in on another Sheffield United return, Sheffield Wednesday fans may be worried that history will repeat itself in the derby when the two sides meet in November.

The Blades won both of their meetings last season, taking 1-0 victories in both clashes. If the two were to face one another right now, it would be anyone’s guess as to who would take all three points, but the Blades may find some new-found confidence in the coming weeks.

This can only be bad news for Sheffield Wednesday, who are struggling with squad depth as Dejphon Chansiri looks for outside investment.

By the time the two do play, Root will be in Australia for the Ashes series, but he will be cheering his beloved Sheffield United on as they look to put their shocking start behind them.
