Sheffield United fans told to blame players and warned of Chris Wilder Peterborough scenario risk

Ruben Selles has been sacked by Sheffield United and Chris Wilder is expected to return – but the Blades fan base have been warned this may not be the ultimate solution they think it is.

While official confirmation is yet to be dropped, EFL Analysis’ chief football correspondent Graeme Bailey says Selles has been dismissed after suffering six defeats out of his first six games in charge. His final game in charge came in the form of a 5-0 thrashing at Ipswich Town.

Wilder is expected to return as Blades boss just three months on from his departure after finishing third in the Championship with 90 points. We understand that former Brighton technical director, David Weir, is a potential option for the Blades to come in to help avoid another Selles-type scenario.

However, Sheffield United fans have been told to look beyond ex-Hull City manager Selles for the answer to his horrendous spell – and that Wilder may not be the answer supporters are hoping for.

Sheffield United fans told to blame players for Ruben Selles’ downfall

Sheffield Wednesday fan, podcast host and talkSPORT2 presenter Dan Fudge reacted to the news of Selles’ impending departure on talkSPORT on Sunday.

“This club is getting nowhere fast,” Fudge said. “The players have a lot of responsibility to shoulder that they didn’t respond to Selles because they like the blood, sweat and tears and blood and thunder way Chris Wilder plays football.”

He continued: “The players have got a lot of responsibility to show for Selles’ departure. On Friday night, they were woeful against Ipswich. They were so poor. You look at players like Gustavo Hamer, who tried to engineer himself a move out to the Netherlands, that is not the shape of a man who is a professional footballer. We need to take a look at the players’ involvement in Selles’ departure.”

Hamer was approached by Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven, but no sale went through. He was then on the bench against Ipswich.

Chris Wilder tipped to end up like Darren Ferguson at Peterborough United

Fudge also feels that Wilder could end up being like Darren Ferguson at Peterborough United, with the Scottish manager serving his fourth managerial spell with Posh, and the Blades are making a mistake not looking elsewhere.

“What we need to know is Chris Wilder, in the realms of modern day football, is a bit of a dinosaur,” he continued. He is a bit classless as well, but that’s my Sheffield Wednesday head on. But there is an element of, if we keep going back to Chris Wilder, you’re going to be the Championship version of Peterborough and Darren Ferguson.

“You’re not going to move forward. The players do want to move on, they wanted to play their blood and guts and thunder. They felt that they just missed out on promotion last year. Had it not been for this two point deduction, we’d have done this and we’d have done that. You’re not going to move on as a football club if you keep going backwards.”

He added: “We can all sit there and say ‘Chris Wilder is the man’, but at Watford and Middlesbrough, he was rubbish!”

If Wilder is appointed, his first game back in charge will be against newly promoted Charlton Athletic on Saturday at Bramall Lane.
