Micah Richards says Vincent Kompany signed a ‘superstar’ at Burnley, now he’s a ‘headless chicken’

Burnley made their stint in the Championship short and sweet as Scott Parker achieved promotion with the Clarets at the first time of asking.

An entertaining encounter at Turf Moor on Monday ended with Burnley beating Sheffield United 2-1, sparking scenes of jubilation at full time.

Scott Parker earned his third promotion from the Championship, describing the one with the Clarets as the best one so far.

Parker has done an ‘unbelievable’ job in transforming the side following their relegation last year, with Burnley boasting an outrageous defensive record, having only conceded 15 goals in 44 matches.

It wasn’t just defensive solidity that formed the foundations of their success, as Burnley were near-perfect in the transfer window.

Micah Richards called Wilson Odobert a ‘headless chicken’

Following their relegation from the Premier League in 2024, Burnley were able to recoup some massive fees for their players, including Wilson Odobert.

Tottenham signed Odobert for £25 million after watching him produce six goal involvements in 29 top-flight appearances for Burnley last term.

The 20-year-old was seen as a star of the future and someone with huge potential, but so far, the French under-21 international has struggled during a difficult period for Spurs.

Speaking on the Rest Is Football podcast, Micah Richards spoke about Odobert and suggested he looked like a ‘superstar’ after Vincent Kompany signed him from Troyes in 2023 however, he’s now playing like a ‘headless chicken’.

“Odobert they got from Burnley,” Richards said. “I remember when Vincent Kompany signed him, he looked like he was gonna be an absolute superstar, but he looks like a bit of a headless chicken at the moment. So maybe he’s just down to confidence, but this is not good enough.”

What Ange Postecoglou has said about Odobert

Odobert hasn’t had the rub of the green since joining Spurs in the summer, seeing his involvement restricted by two hamstring injuries.

The 2005-born star has missed a total of 146 days of action and only appeared 15 times in all competitions.

The youngster can be forgiven for not reaching his potential this term but the signs are there to suggest he’s gaining confidence, as Ange Postecoglou praised him in February.

“You could see Wilson hasn’t played for a while, but you could also see the quality he has,” Postecoglou said.

“I think he grew into the game in the second half. I thought he was a big catalyst at the beginning of the second half when he was running at the opposition.

“He is an exciting player and if we can manage him through this period and get him to a really decent level of fitness, I’m sure he will help us finish the season strong.”

Ultimately, pocketing £25m for Odobert was brilliant business by Burnley, though the Frenchman can still repay that price tag at Spurs.
