The Championship was filled with drama on Monday as Burnley and Leeds United secured their promotions to the Premier League while West Brom kissed goodbye to their play-off hopes.
West Brom’s 3-1 defeat to relegation-threatened Derby County was the nail in the coffin for their top-six chances and also the end of the road for Tony Mowbray.
The Baggies sacked Mowbray after securing victory in just five of his 17 games in charge while winning just one of his previous eight matches.
Mowbray publicly slammed the West Brom players following the loss to Derby as he questioned their lack of desire and intensity.
Worryingly, the 61-year-old also singled out one of his strikers for not being fit enough to help his side in the Championship play-off race.

West Brom fans respond to Tony Mowbray’s comments on Daryl Dike
West Brom need a major clear-out in the summer. The Baggies have several problems to address, including in the forward areas.
Daryl Dike returned from a serious Achilles injury in February, and supporters wanted the American striker to be given a chance to lead the line.
The problem facing Mowbray was that his work rate and training levels weren’t considered sufficient to return to full match sharpness, leaving the manager with no option but to leave him on the bench.
“The issue I have with Dike is he doesn’t train every day. He has two or three days where he doesn’t do any training,” Mowbray said in his final moments as West Brom boss.
“If I’m wanting to play a game with intensity and pressing and denying the opposition the ball, Daryl’s not – in my opinion – at the level fitness-wise to help the team.
Reacting to these comments on X, some supporters weren’t happy with Mowbray singling out Dike, as one fan wrote: “Nice one Tone, would’ve believed you if you didn’t pick Jog Swift each week for high intensity football.”
“Respectfully, Tony, this is boring now. We would have probably listened to you if you didn’t play price in a false 9, Grady defensive Mid and continue to play Jog Swift,” another replied.
“Those Dike comments are a disgrace. End of,” a third said.
“Dike, by all accounts one of the good guys, gets talked about like that. Thought man management was his strength,” another questioned while a sixth commented: “Seems a bit harsh from Mowbray for me and unexpected of him.”
Who could replace Mowbray at West Brom?
Mowbray ultimately bowed out in flames with those comments. He showed a level of disrespect towards one of his players knowing he was going to leave the club.
The big challenge for the next manager coming through the door is rebuilding the club, with several older players set to leave, including Grady Diangana, John Swift, and Semi Ajayi.
West Brom want to build a younger squad with eyes on the future and that also applies to their managerial appointment.
Ryan Mason has been linked to the West Brom job, and although fans aren’t happy with the links, the former Tottenham midfielder is the profile of manager they’re looking for.
Miron Muslic at Plymouth Argyle and former Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper could also be on their radar this summer, with concrete links yet to materialise.
