Middlesbrough fans have been reacting to the news that their club could sign Barry Bannan.

Sheffield Wednesday are in a financial crisis at the moment, which has seen a plethora of their big names leave.

Barry Bannan has continued to train with the Owls, but he has been out of contract since June 30, 2025.

It has now emerged this week that Middlesbrough could sign Bannan, and have competition from fellow Championship side Millwall.

Boro’s interest comes after they released Jonny Howson this summer and are expected to lose Hayden Hackney to Ipswich Town.

Bannan has been a key figure at Sheffield Wednesday for many years and has plenty of Championship experience.

But Middlesbrough fans are really not keen on the move, with many taking to social media to express that they don’t want a transfer to happen.

One fan wrote: “Big nope. Quality player in his day. But not anymore.”

A second responded: “Hahahahahhahaha… no.”

A third Middlesbrough fan joked: “He’s only 82 years old lol.”

“Oh nooooooo,” tweeted another Boro supporter.

A fifth called Bannan an ‘Old Man…’ while there were multiple gifs sent expressing displeasure at a move.

Middlesbrough midfield transfer plan

With Howson gone and Hackney leaving, the Teessiders are short of options in midfield.

Boro have already signed Abdoulaye Kante this summer to strengthen in that area.

But it’s understood that Middlesbrough want a midfielder to replace Hackney on top of the Kante addition.

Elsewhere, Boro are expected to sign two strikers this summer as talks with Danny Ings continue.
