Mike Dodds makes honest Richard Kone admission as QPR close in on Wycombe Wanderers star

QPR have had an excellent summer transfer window, and they are set to add to their squad in the coming days.

The R’s have won the race for Richard Kone, beating the likes of Leicester City and Swansea City to the Wycombe Wanderers striker who turned 22 just last month.

A fee of around £5m is expected to be paid for the Ivorian, but the initial fee is closer to the £3m mark as the forward prepares for life in the Championship.

QPR were beaten by League One outfit Plymouth Argyle in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening, while Wycombe themselves progressed thanks to a 1-0 win over Leyton Orient and manager Mike Dodds has given an update on Kone.

Mike Dodds comments on Richard Kone’s future ahead of QPR move

With Kone on his way to Loftus Road, Wycombe are going to need to find a replacement for the striker soon, and he was not involved against Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road.

Nevertheless, Dodds kept his cards close to his chest following the final whistle, explaining (via: Bucks Free Press): “Regardless of what is going on with Rich, I was never going to involve him tonight [away at Leyton Orient] and the same with Dan Udoh, as I didn’t want to risk them for the game at the weekend.

“I know there have been some negotiations, whether that has been finalised or not, I don’t know. One thing I don’t want to do is set any rumours off because I don’t have a huge amount of clarity on what the direction is.

“I want to be honest with the fans and not pull the wool over their eyes, and not say this or that’s happening, it then doesn’t happen, and I am getting lambasted on Twitter. At this moment, I don’t know, but over the next 24/48 hours, we’ll be able to give you an update.”

Richard Kone is going to be a huge loss for Wycombe Wanderers

It has looked likely that Kone was going to leave the Chairboys at some point this summer, with EFL Analysis revealing back in March that at least 10 clubs had registered an interest in the striker.

However, that does not make replacing him any easier, and Dodds has a huge task on his hands to ensure that his loss is not felt too heavily.

He scored 18 goals in 41 League One appearances for Wycombe last season in what was a breakout campaign for the QPR-bound striker.

At just 22, the future is incredibly bright for Kone, and the R’s have got an extremely talented player on their hands as they look to close out the deal in the coming days.
