Prospective new Sheffield Wednesday owner reveals details of consortium as Chansiri’s $75m mistake comes to light

Sheffield Wednesday are still embroiled in a financial mess right now, but the latest comments from Adam Shaw regarding his desire to buy the club will give fans hope.

While some players have been paid their wages for May, others remain unpaid, leaving Sheffield Wednesday with that transfer embargo still hanging over their heads.

Dejphon Chansiri has been unusually quiet throughout the whole situation, which leaves supporters with little faith that a long-lasting resolution is on the horizon.

The one hope now is that Adam Shaw and his consortium manage to strike a deal with Chansiri to take on the club. That’s easier said than done, though, with the Owls chairman known to be notoriously difficult to negotiate with.

Dejphon Chansiri has rejected $75m offer for Sheffield Wednesday

It is thought Shaw has long been interested in buying Sheffield Wednesday. As an Owls fan and a wealthy businessman, he would likely be a good fit — though some Wednesday fans aren’t convinced by Shaw and his credentials.

He’s not alone, though. Shaw comes with the backing of a 16-strong consortium, according to a new report from The Athletic with exclusive information from the man himself.

It is said Shaw’s group includes Major League Baseball stars, an unnamed former Premier League star, and a big name celebrity from the US. While he didn’t give away any names, Shaw did suggest some connections with Florida in particular.

That’s exciting stuff, for sure. But, the worrying thing amid the report is that Shaw has already had two substantial offers knocked back by Chansiri.

The report claims Shaw went to the Owls owner in April with an offer worth $65m (just under £48m), though most of that was made up with performance-related bonuses, and had the approach rejected.

That’s fair enough, given the nature of the deal. However, Shaw and his group returned in May with an improved $75m (£55.25m) offer, with full payment guaranteed, and all they got in return was more “short shrift” from Chansiri.

How much Sheffield Wednesday is worth, and how much Chansiri will want

Based on what we know about Chansiri and his valuation (or at least demands) for Sheffield Wednesday, Shaw’s group is some way off an acceptable offer.

An intermediary for Chansiri claimed the Owls chief wants £160m for the club. According to our own financial expert Adam Williams, Chansiri will want at least £105m to match the deal Sheffield United struck not so long ago.

Whether those figures are fair or not is another matter, but it all comes down to Chansiri’s whims at the end of the day. He has said before that he would sell if the right offer comes in, and he appears more than ready to drag his feet until that day comes.

There had been some degree of bittersweet hope that Chansiri would fail the EFL’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test after his latest problems, but that didn’t come to pass. If he had, Chansiri would have been forced to sell the club, but he now looks to be in an odd position of relative strength in that regard.

For the sake of all Sheffield Wednesday fans, here’s hoping Shaw and his group come back with another offer soon, and that Chansiri finally caves and moves on.
