Ruben Selles’ criticism was ignored as EFL expert questions Sheffield United recruitment

Sheffield United boss Ruben Selles cried out for an improvement in recruitment this summer, and according to one EFL expert, they were unable to deliver on that wish.

Sheffield United have endured many challenges at this early stage of the 2025/26 Championship season, with Ruben Selles yet to notch a point as Blades manager.

The Blades boss has already come under scrutiny at this early stage of the campaign, as a section of Sheffield United fans have called for Selles to move on.

It has been difficult for Sheffield United to transition from Chris Wilder to Selles, although poor recruitment has not helped the Spaniard.

Selles criticised Sheffield United’s recruitment, and while that did spring the club into action to bring in extra bodies, particularly in defence, one EFL expert has suggested that there are still many concerns for the Blades.

Sheffield United’s recruitment has made the Blades ‘weaker’ despite Ruben Selles concerns

Despite bringing in 10 new recruits to Bramall Lane this summer, Sheffield United have been told that their squad is now ‘weaker’ compared to before the transfer window.

Sheffield United have lost the likes of Anel Ahmedhodzic, Vini Souza, and Kieffer Moore, all of whom played a prominent role in Chris Wilder’s side last season, which reached the Championship play-off final.

EFL expert Justin Peach, via the Second Tier Podcast, has spoken specifically about the desperate need to bring in defenders, which, as a result, left them short in attack.

Reflecting on Sheffield United’s recruitment, Peach said: “I do think the Sheffield United squad is a lot weaker than it was last season. There are a couple of unknowns, the likes of Nil Zetterstrom, the centre-back who’s coming in from Melmo. Don’t know how he’s going to adapt. He’s also 20 years old so he’s still young.

“Danny Ings and Ogbene could work out. Might not. Alex Matos falls in the same category as Zetterstrom. Tathi Chong, we know, is a very good technical player but has also left a lot to be desired over the past 18 months at Luton.

“I just look at it and I go ‘there’s not a lot of balance there’. It feels like they’re short on creativity. They’re definitely short on that midfield steel that Vini Souza left.”

Blades attacking woes could cost Ruben Selles his job

Ruben Selles is under pressure at Sheffield United, and it is no surprise after four straight defeats in the Championship, leaving them rock-bottom.

In addition, Sheffield United have only scored one Championship goal so far this season, making it a prominent concern that Selles’ side simply are not being effective enough in the final third.

There were issues in defence, which was clear after the first game when Tyler Bindon and Rhys Norrington-Davies struggled as a centre-back partnership against Bristol City, and while it looks like this has been rectified, questions still loom over the attack.

The signing of Danny Ings has sparked optimism, but aside from that, Sheffield United fans have very little hope that the attacking issues will be solved overnight, which could rest on Selles.
