Sheffield United boss Ruben Selles is far from happy with the club’s recruitment as he confirms whether any new players are expected ahead of this weekend’s Championship clash.
It has been a challenging start to Sheffield United’s 2025/26 season, having been thumped in their Championship opener against Bristol City.
Defensive concerns were at the forefront of Sheffield United’s issues, and it came back to haunt them once again as they crashed out of the EFL Cup against fellow Championship side Birmingham City.
New Blades boss Ruben Selles has been critical of his players, expressing his concerns straight after full-time in the defeat to the Robins, which saw him deliver an on-pitch team talk after the unsatisfactory showing.
Selles has now taken aim at the club’s recruitment so far this summer, highlighting what has ‘not been good enough’.

Sheffield United boss Ruben Selles hits out at recruitment shortcomings
In Ruben Selles’ pre-match press conference ahead of Sheffield United’s clash with Swansea City, he was quizzed on whether any arrivals were expected ahead of the weekend, and if he felt that recruitment had been successful so far.
Via Football Heaven, Selles said: “Our process has not been good enough, I think that’s obvious. At the beginning of the market, we talked about reinforcement with three players; now it’s five players.
“We have not been able to bring anyone else for different circumstances. I will accept my part of it, but everyone [must accept blame].
“We are not going to make excuses, we are just going to focus on what we can do, we know the players that can go on Saturday and make the difference. My focus is going to be on them from now until after the game.”
Sheffield United are incredibly light in the centre-back department as things stand, and things could be hampered even further with Rhys Norrington-Davies linked to QPR, whilst Jack Robinson has attracted interest from high-spending Wrexham.

Ruben Selles has every right to be annoyed with transfer ongoings
Whilst more departures could be sanctioned at Sheffield United, with Gus Hamer attracting interest, as well as a number of Blades centre-backs, it should be expected that arrivals would come fast, but that has not been the case.
The squad has already been depleted, and it is safe to say that Sheffield United are by no means as strong in terms of personnel in comparison to the squad utilised by Chris Wilder last season.
Supporters have already started getting on the back of Selles after the difficult start to the season, but he has been given no favours regarding recruitment at this early stage.
In the remaining weeks of the window, Sheffield United owners COH Sports now face pressure to deliver on Selles’ demands, otherwise it could be a difficult campaign awaiting the Spaniard and the Blades.
