Ruben Selles makes worrying admission on Jack Robinson’s Sheffield United future amid Wrexham interest

Sheffield United have endured a difficult start to the Championship season, both on and off the field.

Sheffield United suffered an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Bristol City in the Championship opening weekend clash.

Sheffield United’s display was “frightening” against the Robins, who got revenge for their 6-0 aggregate defeat from the play-off semi-final in May.

The Blades face Birmingham City in the Carabao Cup opening round tonight, and if Ruben Selles’ side do not improve quickly from the weekend, their torrid start to the season could continue.

Off the field, Sheffield United captain Jack Robinson is wanted by newly promoted Wrexham, and Selles has now made an honest admission regarding his skipper’s future.

Sheffield United lost Anel Ahmedhodzic to Feyenoord this summer in a monumental blow to Selles’ backline.

Since the centre-back’s exit, Sheffield United have eyed Ben Godfrey as a potential Ahmedhodzic replacement after his loan stint at Ipswich Town last season.

Therefore, the news that Wrexham are interested in Jack Robinson casts a cloud of fear over Bramall Lane, as losing Selles’ skipper from central defence would be another nightmare for the Blades boss.

The Red Dragons, who lost 2-1 to Southampton on Saturday, remain keen on recruiting the Blades skipper before the window slams shut on September 1.

When discussing if he expects Robinson to be a Blades player by the end of the window, Selles explained the situation ahead of the Blues clash.

He told his Sheffield United press conference: “Let’s see. I never say never and I think there’s a lot of factors on that for the moment.

“That’s all I can say because due to the nature of the situation right now, I’m not going to talk about more than 24/48 hours.

“He’s our player, our captain, and he’s ready to play tomorrow (tonight against Birmingham).”

After the Blades’ lacklustre start to the 2025/26 Championship, ‘never say never’ is a worrying admission from Selles and is not the reassurance that the Sheffield United faithful need amid a testing summer transfer window.

Sheffield United must not sell Jack Robinson to Wrexham

Given the heavy 4-1 loss to fellow promotion hunters Bristol City, selling central defender and captain Robinson to Wrexham would be a massive own goal for the Blades.

Sheffield United need signings before the window closes, so it would be a baffling call to part ways with such a key figure in an imperative position, which needs assets added in the window rather than being stripped of them.

Robinson was introduced for Rhys Norrington-Davies against Bristol City after the latter’s poor showing in the clash.

Following the loss, reports emerged that QPR want Norrington-Davies, who received sarcastic cheers from some sections of the Bramall Lane stands when making way for Wrexham-wanted Robinson on Saturday.

The Blades are rock bottom of the Championship table, admittedly after only one game week, but the start to the season has made it clear that Sheffield United must add to Selles’ squad rather than take away either Norrington-Davies or Robinson.
