Ruben Selles forced to sanction Sheffield United exit despite major defensive problems for the Blades

Sheffield United were rocked by Bristol City on Saturday evening as they were beaten 4-1 by Bristol City at Bramall Lane.

Gerhard Struber masterminded an incredible victory for his Robins side in South Yorkshire, with one Blades fan calling for Ruben Selles to be sacked already.

However, with 45 games left in the season, there is still plenty of time for the Spaniard to get his team playing the football he knows they can play after a really strong pre-season.

Nevertheless, there are questions about the defence that Sheffield United currently have at their disposal, but they may have helped themselves out with their next departure.

Sheffield United set to sell Jefferson Caceres to Scottish club

Jefferson Caceres only joined the Blades in the January transfer window, signing the winger from Peruvian side FBC Melgar. He has two years left on his contract at Bramall Lane, but is yet to make an appearance in red-and-white.

However, according to Alan Nixon, the 22-year-old will join Scottish club Dunfermline on a permanent deal as Sheffield United deal with work permit issues as they push for more signings.

Nixon said: “Sheffield United are ready to send Peruvian winger Jefferson Caceres to Scottish side Dunfermline. Caceres, 22, was signed after research by the Blades’ AI advisers, who also own the Scottish Championship club.

“The Peruvian has had little game time at Bramall Lane and a spell under Neil Lennon may help him. Blades have to let Caceres leave permanently to create a space for another player who would not qualify for a work permit in this country.

“A loan does not work under the current rules which only allow four ‘unqualified’ foreign players. So the money spent on Caceres has effectively been wasted. United are currently negotiating a deal with Swedish side Malmo for young defender Nils Zatterstrom. He does not qualify for a work permit yet.”

The Blades must ensure that they are equipped properly at the back

After losing Anel Ahmedhodzic to Feyenoord, Sheffield United have been left vulnerable defensively and it showed against Bristol City.

Jack Robinson is also of interest to Wrexham, making the Blades’ problems even more pressing and work must be done quickly to ensure that he does not depart.

Zatterstrom does look the most likely to move to Bramall Lane, but there will be concerns over his potential after the issues that Sheffield United have faced with their most recent signings from abroad.

Yet, for Caceres, this is the last thing that he would have hoped for, having been sold the dream of the Premier League, and he is the unfortunate loser in this saga.
