Rubin Colwill plays down Birmingham City comparisons as Cardiff City target League One title

Cardiff City got their League One campaign off to a winning start on Saturday afternoon as they ran out 2-1 winners over Peterborough United.

Bradley Ihionvien opened the scoring from the penalty spot for the visitors in South Wales, but a stunning Rubin Colwill free kick saw the Bluebirds level the game just after the break.

Ronan Kpakio scored the winner on the hour mark with a fantastic strike from just inside the box to ensure that Brian Barry-Murphy’s reign started with victory.

While Huddersfield Town are the favourites for the title, with Stockport County pushing for a top two finish, Cardiff should not be written off and Colwill has been keen to say that his side are in the promotion race.

Rubin Colwill makes Cardiff City promotion claim after Birmingham City’s incredible title win

Birmingham City had a record-breaking year in League One last time out, but they will not deny themselves that their financial strength allowed them to take the division by storm.

Cardiff, on the other hand, have had to be more shrewd in this transfer window and Colwill believes that his team can fight for the title, but has played down comparisons to Blues.

He said (via: BBC Sport): “I think what we’re doing is probably very different to what Birmingham have done. They spent a lot of money, brought a lot of players in and I think we’ve almost, not gone the other way, but we’ve almost trusted in what we’ve got is good enough, and it is good enough.

“I’m fully confident in every player in our changing room that we’re capable of winning this league and getting promoted.”

The Bluebirds are going under the radar

After the Bluebirds were criticised for their relegation to League One last season, this is the perfect start to life in the third tier for them.

Cardiff have gone under the radar this summer, with focus on other sides allowing Barry-Murphy to have a pressure-free first few weeks in South Wales.

However, they have now played their hand and teams will know just what they are all about now after a commanding performance against Peterborough.

Colwill will be crucial to success, but he needs his teammates to sustain similar levels to himself if promotion is going to be won.
