We are still months away from the EFL season starting again for 2025/26, but early signs point to Huddersfield Town being the top dogs in League One next term.
The summer transfer window is now open, which is great news as it keeps us fed for football for the next few months. But, let’s be honest, we’re all just counting down the days for August to arrive and the games to start again.
League One produced some thrilling stories in 2024/25, with Wrexham making history and Birmingham City breaking records, while Charlton Athletic also secured their return to the Championship.
Now, as we look ahead to the 2025/26 campaign, we think we’ve already seen enough to tell us that Huddersfield Town will be the champions of the third tier.

Huddersfield Town mean business, they’re making smart moves
First and foremost, Huddersfield acted swiftly to solve their most pressing issue ahead of the summer: Finding a new manager.
Michael Duff was dismissed way back in March, with Jon Worthington placed in temporary charge until the end of the season.
Now, Lee Grant has taken on the job full-time, and the highly-rated coach brings with him experience at Premier League level thanks to his work alongside Kieran McKenna at Ipswich Town.
Grant has wasted no time putting his stamp on the squad, either. Ryan Ledson arrives on a free transfer, after being released by Preston North End to bolster the Terriers’ midfield.
Meanwhile, Marcus Harness left Ipswich to link up with Grant once more and is seen as a huge coup given he was playing in the Championship last season.
With a top young coach and reinforcements coming through the door, Huddersfield are in a great place already with plenty of time to continue in that direction.
Meanwhile, we had initially predicted Plymouth Argyle would win League One, but the chaotic departure of Miron Muslic over the weekend has left that in doubt.
The division is wide open ahead of the new campaign, but Huddersfield appear to be on a mission to be firing on all cylinders from the get-go and secure their return to the second tier.

2024/25 was a new low for Huddersfield, they have to do better
For much of the 2024/25 campaign, Huddersfield looked destined for a spot in the play-offs, but awful form since the turn of the year harmed their chances.
The Terriers ended up finishing down in tenth place, a massive 14 points adrift of sixth-placed Leyton Orient. That’s way off what is expected of a club of Huddersfield’s stature and history, and they will have to do far better next season.
| Position | Team | Points |
| 1 | Birmingham City | 111 |
| 2 | Wrexham | 92 |
| 3 | Stockport County | 87 |
| 4 | Charlton Athletic | 85 |
| 5 | Wycombe Wanderers | 84 |
| 6 | Leyton Orient | 78 |
| 7 | Reading | 75 |
| 8 | Bolton Wanderers | 68 |
| 9 | Blackpool | 67 |
| 10 | Huddersfield Town | 64 |
That showing in 2024/25 was Huddersfield’s lowest league position since 2007/08 (when they also finished tenth in League One), and is a far cry from the highs of that promotion to the Premier League back in 2017.
Chairman Kevin Nagle is excited about Grant’s appointment and what it could mean for the club going forward.
He told WeAreTerriers: “I think Lee’s a really dynamic coach. I watched him at Ipswich, I watched him really at the first-team level, take on really a leadership role, we saw that. Everybody who knows Lee knows his skill sets.
“He’s data-driven. It’s a business today, you’ve got to be data-driven. He’s a leader. You can see that he’s a leader. And at the same time he possesses a lot of qualities that would really elevate him above his peers even though he’s an unproven manager at this point.”
Nagle will now be hoping that Grant can end Huddersfield’s stay in the third tier and get them back to where they belong.
