Cardiff City kicked off their League One campaign with a home clash against Peterborough United on Saturday lunchtime.

Cardiff suffered relegation from the Championship last term, but under the guidance of new manager Brian Barry-Murphy, the Bluebirds will expect to challenge in the League One promotion race.

The transfer window has been a bit of a slow burner for the Welsh side, who have welcomed no new senior additions to their squad, instead promoting youth into the first-team.

Barry-Murphy has witnessed a raft of departures, though, including Aaron Ramsey completing a switch to Mexican side UNAM Pumas.

As it stands, EFL Analysis has revealed that Cardiff are hopeful of keeping Callum Robinson despite Championship interest, though he started on the bench against Peterborough United.

League One fans stunned by Rubin Colwill’s free-kick against Peterborough

Cardiff wanted to get off to a flying start in League One, but unfortunately, their first half against Peterborough didn’t go as planned.

Bradley Ihionvien slotted away a penalty on the half-hour mark after Will Fish brought down Declan Frith in the box to give the visitors the lead.

But the Bluebirds responded in style in the second stanza, with captain Rubin Colwill scoring a sumptuous free kick with his instep before Ronan Kpakio produced a thunderous strike to give them the lead.

Colwill was the Cardiff captain in the absence of Calum Chambers, and supporters around the globe were blown away by the technique on his free-kick.

“WHAT AN UNBELIEVABLE FREE KICK FROM RUBIN COLWILL,” someone else wrote, while a third said: “Rubin Colwill take a bow son unbelievable finish.”

“The Welsh Beckham. Rubin Colwill with the goal of the League One season so far,” another replied.

“Colwill might be the best player in the whole division tbh,” a sixth commented and a seventh stated: “Ruben Colwill shouldn’t be allowed to play in League One, he’s too good for this standard also that’s utterly ridiculous.”

Colwill only supplied one goal and two assists for Cardiff in the Championship last term, and now he’s dropped into the third tier, Lee Hendrie has demanded more from him.

Speaking live on Sky Sports commentary, Hendrie said: “I want to see more of that from him, because I think he can tear League One apart, I really do.”

The 23-year-old certainly endeared himself to the division in some style, and his all-round performance was superb.
