EFL expert makes Brian Barry-Murphy ‘fortunes’ claim following Cardiff City appointment

Cardiff City have entered the beginning of a new era down in League One under the stewardship of Brian Barry-Murphy.

Cardiff City suffered relegation from the Championship last season after a dismal campaign, which saw a number of managerial changes and ended with them bottom under Aaron Ramsey.

Ramsey has joined Mexican giants Pumas this summer, where he will continue his playing career, after his brief stint in charge.

After relegation to the third tier, Cardiff are on the brink regarding financial issues, but Brian Barry-Murphy has brought a new wave of optimism to the fanbase.

EFL expert Ali Maxwell outlines optimism over Brian Barry-Murphy at Cardiff City

Barry-Murphy has not been in charge of a club as permanent boss since a stint between 2019 and 2021 with Rochdale, but the 46-year-old is well thought of in the game and many are getting excited by what is to come from Cardiff next term.

Ali Maxwell of NTT20 is an EFL expert and he falls into that category. He said: “One of the obvious concerns about Barry-Murphy — compared to others who were in the frame — is EFL managerial experience. He’s not been managing in the EFL since 2021.

“In that time he’s been with Manchester City working for their elite development squad in PL2 under Enzo Maresca and also taking the team himself. Also, he’s been an assistant manager at Leicester City for the second half of last season under Ruud van Nistelrooy.

“Now, the fact that he hasn’t been managing in the EFL for a few years does that matter. The last three managers to have won the League One title were in their first ever managerial roles: Chris Davies of Birmingham City, John Mousinho of Portsmouth, and Steven Schumacher at Argyle.

“Schumacher won the league in front of Kieran McKenna when he was in his first managerial role, so I think we can say pretty definitively off the bat that previous EFL managerial experience is not a precursor for success if you’re trying to get back up to the Championship.

“Having been a first-team manager for quite a few years, my perception is that the players, and particularly young players, that Cardiff have will really enjoy playing with someone with his mentality, with his personality, and with his preferred style of play.

“So, I think it’s really good news for Cardiff. I think it’s fair to say that I’m positive about this appointment because I think that there’s a world here where the players really enjoy playing for Brian Barry-Murphy.

“Where they get a taste for dominating and winning games again — which Cardiff haven’t done for years. If that’s the case it should be a team that the fans really enjoy watching and it should be a team at League One level that wins a lot of games.

“And all that together could help turn around the fortunes of Cardiff City, who have been circling the drain in the Championship.”

Ali Maxwell issues concerns over Vincent Tan’s ownership of Cardiff City

Maxwell laid into Cardiff’s ownership recently and he referred back to that here with a caveat to the excitement surrounding the club currently. He added: “As I said on my last video, I’ve been unimpressed with the way that Cardiff City have been run for a few years.

“And it’s my belief that if there isn’t coherent decision-making from the very top of the club, and if there isn’t a solid structure around a head coach, it’s very hard for anyone to succeed in the modern game when there’s just so much that goes into winning at any level.

“So, excited about the appointment, excited to watch Barry-Murphy’s Cardiff City team, and hopeful that they will give him the support that he needs when it comes to staff, budget, player recruitment, and when it comes to the clarity of decision-making throughout the organisation.”
