Sheffield United and Sunderland snubbed as EFL pundit weighs in on debate, ‘ridiculous’ record mooted

Sheffield United and Sunderland’s managers have both been taken out of one conversation by an EFL pundit.

The 2024/25 Championship season is drawing to a close and things are starting to heat up at the top end of the table.

Going into Friday’s fixtures, it is Leeds United and Burnley who currently occupy the top two places.

After Sheffield United lost to Plymouth Argyle last time out, they have dropped down to third, and are five points off automatic promotion.

As for Sunderland, their chances of going up via a first or second place finish ended some time ago.

They are set to compete in the play-offs next month, but it’s still been a disappointing few months for the Black Cats.

Chris Wilder and Regis Le Bris can’t be Championship Manager of the Season

While Sheffield United are floundering in the title race and Sunderland have nothing to play for, both their managers are still up forward awards.

The Championship Manager of the Season shortlist was released earlier today, with Chris Wilder, Regis Le Bris, Daniel Farke, and Scott Parker the nominees.

At present, it’s one of Leeds or Burnley who look favourites to win the division and make a return to the Premier League.

Now, speaking on his YouTube channel, EFL pundit Benjamin Bloom has weighed in on the debate over who should be named Championship Manager of the Season.

On this front, Bloom was quick to rule out Wilder and Le Bris, suggesting Parker may just have the edge over Farke owing to Burnley’s ‘ridiculous defensive record’.

He said: “I don’t think it can be Wilder if he’s not in the top two, and I don’t think it can be Le Bris.

“So I’m between Farke and Parker. I don’t know, I’m like 51/49.

“If the season ended and I had to decide right now and Leeds and Burnley are tied on points there, Leeds have got it on goal difference, maybe I go Burnley, maybe, just because of the ridiculous defensive record, and he’s only been there one season, I don’t know.”

Who will be the Championship Player of the Season

While Sheffield United look unlikely to take home to Manager of the Season award, they could land another prize.

The Championship Player of the Season nominees were announced at the same time this week.

James Trafford of Burnley features alongside Leeds’ Dan James and Sheffield United star, Gustavo Hamer.

Hamer has impressed for the Blades this season and could be in with a real chance of picking up the award.
