Of all the clubs in the EFL, it’s hard to imagine any going through a worse time of it than Sheffield Wednesday right now, but it wasn’t always this way.
As things stand, in a nutshell, the Owls are on the verge of a transfer embargo and possible points deduction for a breach of the EFL’s financial rules.
That’s because Dejphon Chansiri, for one reason or another, has failed to pay his players and staff at the club for the second time this year.
There’s every chance now that Chansiri will be forced out by the EFL if they opt to put him through the Owners and Directors Test again, something he would most likely fail.

What Sheffield Wednesday fans were saying about Dejphon Chansiri in 2016
As you may expect, Sheffield Wednesday fans are furious with Chansiri for the position he is putting the club in, and they are very eager for him to hand over to new owners as soon as possible.
These are truly dark times for the Owls, but back at the start of Chansiri’s tenure as the club’s owner, things were looking pretty positive. The club were within a whisker of returning to the Premier League, in fact, with back-to-back play-off defeats leaving fans disappointed but optimistic about the future.
Back in 2016, one fan said, “Brilliant chairman! Keep up the good work Chansiri,” while another added, “We are so lucky to have such a great chairman. One who cares about our history and tradition. One who cares and listens to fans.”
After Chansiri’s statement in the wake of that play-off defeat, fans were very impressed, replying, “I’ve never felt so much trust in all my years for someone who really does have Sheffield Wednesday at heart. Cracking statement of intent.”
Others said, “Actions usually speak louder than words. Our chairman and owner’s actions are evident to see. A man of true integrity,” and “So proud of our club once again. People not connected seem to think Saturday was the end. New era, thanks to the chairman.”
It’s safe to say those sentiments are polar opposite to how they all feel now after what has transpired in the years since.

What’s the latest on the situation at Sheffield Wednesday right now?
We could sit here all day and go into the good, the bad, and the ugly around Sheffield Wednesday right now. Essentially, in March and now for May, Chansiri has failed to pay people’s wages, and that ‘shambolic’ situation has caught the attention of the EFL.
While there’s talk of a takeover at Wednesday, it’s unclear whether Adam Shaw’s group have the necessary financials to make it happen. Plus, negotiations with Chansiri are thought to be difficult, to say the least.
Even in the event of a takeover, any transfer embargo would still stand, which would be a real disaster for a club looking to build on fairly good foundations of a 12th placed finish in the Championship in 2024/25.
Meanwhile, top young talent like Caelan-Kole Cadamarteri are being sold off, Danny Rohl wants to return to Germany, and potential new owners like Turki Alalshikh are looking at other clubs.
All in all, it’s not a good time to support Sheffield Wednesday.
